• Fatality north of Spencer

A Terril man died as a result of an accident that occurred in Clay County at 5:58 p.m. on April 2.

According to the Iowa State Patrol, Jon Maurice Hjelm, 68, of Spencer, was northbound on Highway 71 north of 300th Street when his 2022 Chevrolet K2500 collided in the right lane with a 1955 International 300 utility tractor. The operator, Roland Dean Taylor, 77, of Terril, was thrown from the tractor, which was also northbound. The tractor came to rest in the median.

Taylor died at the scene and Hjelm was reported to have been taken to Spencer Hospital with minor injuries. The accident remains under investigation.

• Arrested on drug charges

Jason Rutzen, 44, of Paullina, was arrested on March 24 after probation and parole officers allegedly discovered a controlled substance and drug paraphernalia in the home where he was staying.

The report stated that law enforcement was summoned to the home where methamphetamine, a scale, a small glass pipe and a wooden box containing several additional glass pipes were found.

Rutzen was charged with Possession of a Controlled Substance-Third or Subsequent Offense, a class D felony; and Possession of Drug Paraphernalia, a misdemeanor. Rutzen was taken to the O’Brien County Jail. A preliminary hearing was scheduled for April 4.

• Vehicle rolls in deep snow

Miram Emelia Ludeke, 64, of Archer, was traveling westbound on 370th Street at 2:20 p.m. on March 14 when she lost control of her 2004 Jeep Grand Cherokee in slush on the road that was caused by drifting snow. The Jeep entered the right ditch and rolled due to deep snow, landing on its wheels.

Ludeke was not injured. Damage to the Grand Cherokee was estimated at $5,500.
