H-M-S teams compete at Wolverine Early Bird meet

The early bird gets the worm or, in the case of a track and field meet on March 30, the early birds were able to compete outdoors.
South O'Brien hosted its Wolverine Early Bird meet which featured athletes from eight schools. Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn's girls finished fourth overall and the boys were fifth.
The Hawk girls won the 4x100 relay (:57.10) with Frankie Mohni, Moriah Otto, Abby Otto and Emily Mutombo. Individually, Mutombo placed third in the 100-meter (:13.84) and 200-meter (:29.25) dashes.
Other individual finishes included: 3000-meter run – Lexi Croatt, third, 14:42.05. 100-meter dash (V) – Abby Otto, 10th, :15.23. 100-meter dash (JV) – Payton Diehm, sixth, :15.72; Pamela Mutombo, 12th, :16.90. 400-meter dash – Jocelyn Abonce, eighth, 1:17.98; Evelyn Steffen, ninth, 1:21.92. 100-meter hurdles – Frankie Mohni, fifth, :20.97. 800-meter run – Abonce, sixth, 3:11.41; Clara Funk, seventh, 3:21.65. 200-meter dash – Moriah Otto, seventh, :31.89. 1500-meter run – Croatt, seventh, 7:04.34; Abonce, eighth, 7:15.98.
H-M-S relay results were: 800-meter sprint medley – Diehm, Megan Otto, Steffen, Moriah Otto, fourth, 2:16.68. Distance medley – Mohni, P. Mutombo, Croatt, Funk, fourth, 5:53.30. 4x200 – (V) Mohni, Moriah Otto, A. Otto, E. Mutombo, fourth, 2:02.16; (JV) – Diehm, Megan Otto, P. Mutombo, Steffen, third, 2:15.55. 4x100 – (JV) Diehm, Megan Otto, P. Mutombo, Steffen, fifth, 1:02.40.
Field event results included: Shot put – Hannan Tessum, sixth, 26'9-1/4"; Natalie McDaniels, 10th, 17'8".
Girls' team scores were: Okoboji 169, Cherokee 116, South O'Brien 114, H-M-S 44, Trinity Christian 27 and Harris-Lake Park 15.
• Boys' results
Ryan Borden recorded the H-M-S boys' best finish. The senior placed second in the 100-meter dash in a time of :12.19.
The Hawks' also placed second in the 4x100 relay with Borden, Jr Araiza, James Gellerman and Ethan Diehm (:46.88). The same group was third in the 4x200 (1:38.56).
Additional individual results were: 3200-meter run – George Vargas, fifth, 11:36.57; 100-meter dash – (V) Araiza, sixth, :12.44; (JV) David Wetrich, 13th, :14.11. 400-meter dash – Damian Dodge, 12th, 1:07.06; Wetrich, 13th, 1:08.24. 800-meter run – Ryan Grotluschen, fourth, 2:18.50; Bryce Dodge, seventh, 2:25.65. 200-meter dash – (V) Diehm, sixth, :25.77; Carter Dolphin, 14th, :28.47. 1600-meter run – B. Dodge, seventh, 5:35.89; Vargas, ninth, 5:44.45.
H-M-S relay results were: 800-sprint medley – Borden, Araiza, Diehm, Gellerman, third, 1:45.89. 4x800 – Grotluschen, Alex Garcia, D. Dodge, Blaine Finster, fourth, 10:12.55.
Austin Smith finished 12th in the varsity shot put (29'4-1/4") and Kevin Arambula came in 13th (28'6-1/2"). Alex Billings placed sixth in the JV shot put (32'1").
Boys' team scores were Okoboji 164, West Monona 106, South O'Brien 85, Cherokee 79, H-M-S 40, H-LP 24 and Trinity Christian 16.
The Hawk track teams are scheduled to compete at the Unity Christian meet on April 10.
