H-M-S boys earn identical team finishes at 2 meets

The 2023 Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn boys' track and field season continued with a pair of sixth-place team finishes.
Kooper Ebel and Bradley Zamudio were the top finishers for H-M-S during the meet hosted by Unity Christian on April 10. Ebel placed second in the 100 meter dash (:11.48) and Zamudio was runner-up in the 400 meter hurdles (1:02.03). Adam Schierholz finished added a third-place finish in the discus with a throw of 124'4".
Other running event participants were: 100 – Ryan Borden, seventh, :12.15; 200 – Jr Araiza, sixth, :24.85; David Wetrich, 14th, :29.14; 400 – Carter Dolphin, sixth, 1:03.80; 800 – Ryan Grotluschen, fourth, 2:21.20; Jose Perez, eighth, 2:32.96; 400 meter hurdles – James Gellerman, eighth, 1:09.03; 1600 – Bryce Dodge, seventh, 5:21.24; George Vargas, eighth, 5:28.53.
Relay results were: 4x200 – Borden, Gellerman, Araiza, Ethan Diehm, third, 1:36.94; 4x800 – Grotluschen, Perez, Damian Dodge, Blaine Finster, fourth, 9:55.24; Distance medley – Gellerman, Zamudio, Grotluschen, B. Dodge, sixth, 4:41.83; Sprint medley – Borden, Araiza, Diehm, Gellerman, seventh, 1:57.09; 4x100 – Borden, Gellerman, Araiza, Diehm, seventh, :50.29.
Other field event results were: Long jump – Diehm sixth, 19-2-1/2"; Zamudio, 10th, 17-2-3/4"; Shot put - Jacob Cates, eighth, 38'7-1/4"; Alex Billings, 13th, 31'6-1/2".
Cates won the JV discus (95'2") and Austin Smith was seventh in the JV shot put (29'10-1/2").
Unity Christian won the team title with 151 points, followed by MOC-Floyd Valley 121, Sibley-Ocheyedan 92, West Sioux 87, Western Christian 59, H-M-S 35 and Storm Lake 27.
• Meet at Spirit Lake
The Hawks also finished sixth overall at the Spirit Lake Coed Invitational on April 11, finishing with 39 points.
Adam Schierholz's second place finish in the discus (125'6") led H-M-S, while Bradley Zamudio came in third in the 400 meter hurdles (1:01.96).
The Hawks also had a second-place relay finish, with Ryan Borden, Jr Araiza, Ethan Diehm and Kooper Ebel running the 4x200 in 1:35.81.
H-M-S field event finishes included: Long jump – Diehm, sixth, 19'4"; Zamudio, 11th, 17'9-1/2"; Shot put – Jacob Cates, 11th, 37'3".
Individual running event results were: 100 – Ebel, fourth, :11.95; Borden, ninth, :12.38; 200 – Ebel, fourth, :23.91; Diehm, 11th, :25.96; 400 – James Gellerman, eighth, :58.17; Bryce Dodge, 11th, :59.32; 800 – Ryan Grotluschen, seventh, 2:21.46; Damian Dodge, 15th, 2:51.46; 1600 – Dodge, seventh, 5:18.98; George Vargas, 10th, 5:30.99; 3200 – Vargas, fifth, 12:05.63.
