H-M-S girls compete at Unity Christian and Spirit Lake

The Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn girls' track and field team had two good tests to continue its 2023 outdoor season.

Competing in the Unity Christian Coed on April 10 at Orange City, H-M-S scored in three events for a total of nine points.

The 4x800 relay team of Kamryn Ebel, Clara Funk, Lexi Croatt and Jocelyn Abonce finished third (12:49.03), Emily Mutombo finished fifth in the 100 meter dash (:13.28) and the sprint medley relay team of Payton Diehm, Abby Otto, Mutombo and Moriah Otto finished sixth (2:11.54).

Other results were: 100 – Moriah Otto, eighth, :14.32; 400 – Diehm, 10th, 1:23.72; 800 – Abonce, 11th, 3:04.97; 200 – A. Otto, ninth, :31.03; Evelyn Steffen, 13th, :32.62; 1500 – Croatt, eighth, 6:12.62; Abonce, 11th, 6:50.29; High jump – Megan Otto, seventh, 4'6"; Shot put (V) – Hannah Tessum, 10th, 26'4-1/2"; Alexis Grover, 11th, 26'3-3/4"; (JV) Natalie McDaniel, 15th, 15'10-3/4"; Discus – (V) Eliza Tewes, eighth, 75'8"; Tessum, 15th, 44'5"; (JV) Grover, 13th, 58'6"; McDaniel, 19th, 35'10".

Relay results included: 4x200 – Frankie Mohni, P. Mutombo, Megan Otto, Steffen, sixth, 2:12.66; 4x100 – Diehm, Mohni, A. Otto, E. Mutombo, sixth, :56.44; Distance medley – Steffen, P. Mutombo, Megan Otto, Ebel, seventh, 5:59.88.

MOC-Floyd Valley won the team title with 164 points. Unity Christian and Sibley-Ocheyedan tied with 114, Storm Lake finished with 79 points, Western Christian had 52 and West Sioux scored 15.

• Sixth at Spirit Lake

The Hawk girls finished sixth overall at the Spirit Lake Coed Invitational on April 11.

Emily Mutombo placed second in the long jump (15'3") and fourth in the 100-meter dash (:13.88) to lead H-M-S.

Other competitors included: High jump – Megan Otto, fifth, 4'4"; Long jump – Payton Diehm, sixth, 13'; Discus – Eliza Tewes, seventh, 85'2"; Shot put – Hannah Tessum, 10th, 26'7-1/2"; Alexis Grover, 11th, 24'3"; 3000 – Clara Funk, seventh, 16:08.34; Lexi Croatt, eighth, 16:10.69; 100 – Pamela Mutombo, 10th, :15.98; 400 – Kamryn Ebel, seventh, 1:17.74; 100 meter hurdles – Frankie Mohni, eighth, :20.93; 800 – Jocelyn Abonce, ninth, 3:10.59; Ebel, 10th, 3:17.64; 200 – Abby Otto, eighth, :31.96; Diehm, 10th, :33.31; 1500 – Croatt, eighth, 6:52.52; Funk, 11th, 7:22.70.

The Hawks' relay finishes were: Distance medley – Diehm, E. Mutombo, A. Otto, Abonce, fifth, 5:22.98; Sprint medley – Evelyn Steffen, Mohni, Moriah Otto, Megan Otto, sixth, 2:24.46; 4x400 – Moriah Otto, Ebel, Steffen, Abonce, seventh, 5:12.76; 4x200 – Steffen, Megan Otto, P. Mutombo, Moriah Otto, eighth, 2:11.24; 4x100 – Diehm, Mohni, A. Otto, E. Mutombo, eighth, :58.24.

Spencer topped the team standings with 167 points, followed by Spirit Lake 148, Okoboji 134, Emmetsburg 60, North Union 44 and H-M-S 21.

H-M-S will host its home meet April 21 and compete in the Okoboji Relays at Milford on April 24.
