Meadowbrook Junior Golf Academy signup is open

Meadowbrook Golf & Country Club will once again host its Junior Golf Academy next month. The event will be held on June 13, 14, 20 and 21.

Children in third grade through high school are invited to participate. A tournament will conclude the schedule. See the ad on Page 3 for more details.

Mother’s Day brunch at Crazy Bob’s

Crazy Bob’s in Hartley is hosting a Mother’s Day brunch on Sunday, May 14. The special runs from 10 a.m.-2 p.m.

H-M-S baseball season opens next week

Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn’s baseball team begins its 2023 schedule by hosting OABCIG on May 15. The Hawks will play Graettinger-Terril/Ruthven-Ayrshire on May 18 at Ruthven. The JV/varsity doubleheaders begin at 5:30 p.m.

Food distribution at Trinity UCC

The Food Bank of Iowa’s mobile pantry program will be conducted on Wednesday, May 17, starting at 4 p.m. at Trinity United Church of Christ in Hartley. The program is available free of charge and geared toward individuals in need of food assistance.

Participants are asked to stay in their vehicles and line up on the east side of the parking lot. The food will be brought to you as you drive under the canopy.

Car seat safety check, author at HPL

Hartley Public Library will host a car seat safety check on Saturday, May 13, from 10 a.m.-1 p.m. Experts will be available to help and inform you, double check to make sure you are using the correct car seat and that it is installed correctly. Please bring your car, child and car seat.

The library will host a craft night for adults on Monday, May 15, at 6 p.m. Participants will make beaded sun catchers and teacup bird feeders.

Hartley Public Library will host an event for local author David Hoye, of Everly, on Thursday, May 18 from 2-5 p.m. At 2 p.m. he will be reading from his three books: “Bits and Pieces,” “All the Kids on My Block” and “Special Days of Summer.” This will be followed by a meet-and-greet as well as a book signing. Everyone is welcome.

Building Better Birders Workshop begins May 19

Dive into the world of birding through the Building Better Birders Workshops, where you will learn about bird research, how to identify birds and go on bird hikes.

This workshop will be conducted by Kelly McKay, of BioEco Research and Monitoring Center, with assistance from Mark Roberts, of Clinton County Conservation, and Brian Ritter and James Wiebler, of Nahant Marsh Education Center.

Attend what workshop times you want or can as time allows. The schedule is as follows:

• Friday May 19, Prairie Heritage Center: 7-8:30 p.m. “Grassland Birds of Iowa” presentation; 8:45-10 p.m. Owl Prowl Hike.

• Saturday May 20, Prairie Heritage Center: 6:30-9:30 a.m. Bird Hike; 9:45-11:15 a.m. “Human Activity Impacts on Bald Eagle Reproductive Success Along the Upper Mississippi River” presentation.

Agronomy workshops for women offered this summer

Agronomy in the Field is a workshop series for women that provides learning opportunities for forage and crop production. The series will be hosted at the Northwest Research and Demonstration Farm near Sutherland from 5:30-7 p.m. one night a month from May through September.

Agronomy in the Field focuses on developing agronomic decision-making skills that can be utilized on one’s own personal farm or family cropping operations, including water quality and conservation practices.

“Our workshop sessions will include hands-on opportunities in fields to help us all better understand the concepts and information we discuss and learn about,” said Extension Field Agronomist Leah Ten Napel, who will be hosting the sessions.

The workshops are organized by ISU Extension and Outreach and are useful for landowners, active farmers and farm families, and others in the agricultural industry interested in a refresher on agronomic basics.

The Northwest Iowa Agronomy in the Field sessions will be held at the Northwest Research and Demonstration Farm, 6320 500th Street, Sutherland, on May 24, June 21, July 19, Aug. 16 and Sept. 13. All sessions will be held from 5:30-7 p.m.

HLC food pantry

Current hours for the food pantry at Hope Lutheran Church in Everly are Wednesdays, 1-5 p.m. Everyone is allowed to come in and pick out their food, but masks are required.
