Hawk boys sprint to 3 wins at WEC meet

Team finishes sixth in final standings

Wins in two relays and one individual race topped the performances by Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn at the War Eagle Conference boys' track and field meet on May 1.

Ryan Borden, Ethan Diehm, James Gellerman and Kooper Ebel led off the running events at Paullina with a win in the sprint medley relay (1:38.89). They came back late in the meet to win the 4x100 relay (:45.32).

In between, Ebel was first to cross the finish line in the 400-meter dash (:51.84).

Adam Schierholz led H-M-S's field event competitors with a third-place finish in the discus throw (125'3") and Diehm finished fifth in the long jump (19'10"). In other running events, Ebel placed fourth in the 200 (:24.03), Ryan Grotluschen finished sixth in the 800 (2:25.57) and George Vargas finished sixth in the 3200 (11:37.14).

Grotluschen, Aidan Espeland, Bryce Dodge and Damian Dodge added a sixth-place finish in the 4x800 (10:11.11).

Other individual results were: 100 – Borden, eighth, :12.79; Jr Araiza, 13th, :13.06. 400 – Carter Dolphin, 13th, 1:01.55. 1600 – B. Dodge, seventh, 5:24.89; Vargas, eighth, 5:24.96. Shot put – Jacob Cates, seventh, 39'2-1/2"; Austin Smith, 15th, 33'11". Discus – Cates, eighth, 109'1".

Blaine Finster, Dolphin, D. Dodge and Ethan Wiersma placed seventh in the 4x400 relay (4:27.22), and Araiza, Gellerman, Schierholz and Wiersma were eighth in the 4x200 (1:45.66).

H-M-S scored 45 points and finished sixth as a team. Heading the boys' standings were Gehlen Catholic 115, MMCRU 96, Unity Christian 90.5, Hinton 81 and West Sioux 74. Finishing behind H-M-S were South O'Brien 39, Akron-Westfield 30, Trinity Christian 9.5 and Harris-Lake Park 9.

• Meet at South O'Brien

H-M-S returned to Paullina on May 4 for the 2023 Wolverine Relays. The meet was stopped after the 200-meter dash due to weather.

The Hawks were led by Diehm's wins in the long jump (20'8-1/2") and 200-meter dash (:24.52). Cates won the tie-breaker with Evan Eilers to finish first in the discus (114'6").

Gellerman (:11.91) and Borden (:11.96) finished second and third in the 100; Vargas placed third in the 3200 (11:37.12); Cates finished fourth in the shot put (39'2-3/4"); and Grotluschen came in fifth in the 800 (2:11.72).

H-M-S's best relay finish was third place by Borden, Gellerman, Bradley Zamudio and Wiersma in the 4x200 (1:36.81). Borden, Diehm, Gellerman and Zamudio finished fourth in the sprint medley (1:41.63); as did Jose Perez, Grotluschen, Finster and B. Dodge in the 4x800 (9:51.22). Wiersma, David Wetrich, B. Dodge and D. Dodge placed sixth in the distance medley (4:29.35).

Other varsity competitors were: 400 – Dolphin, 10th, 1:00.40; Wetrich, 13th, 1:09.70. 800 – D. Dodge, 11th, 2:38.45. Shot put – Damion Hansen, eighth, 35'8-1/4".

JV competitors were: 100 – Wiersma, sixth, :13.05; Wetrich, ninth, :13.80. Shot put – Kevin Arambula, ninth, 28'8".

Sioux Central won the abbreviated meet with 112 points, Alta-Aurelia was second with 84 and H-M-S was a close third with 79. Other team scores were South O'Brien 70, Unity Christian 48, West Bend-Mallard 43 and Trinity Christian 25.
