Kooper Ebel named Class A Player of the Year

The accolades keep coming for Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn senior Kooper Ebel, who was named the 2022 Class A Player of the Year by the Iowa Football Coaches Association.

The Hawk quarterback helped lead H-M-S to back-to-back 8-3 records in 2021 and 2022, each ending in the quarterfinal round of the Class A playoffs. He was the Offensive MVP of Class A District 1 for three straight seasons.

"I could not be more excited for him," said Hawk coach Jay Eilers in a recent announcement of the honor.

According to statistics listed on Bound, the statewide high school athletic database, Ebel ranked ahead of all Class A players with 32 rushing touchdowns and 2,511 rushing yards. He was second in total touchdowns (38), all-purpose yards (2,612) and offensive yards (3,335), and third in rushing attempts (268).

Ebel's longest touchdown run (84 yards) is listed as seventh among all Class A players and his 9.4 yards per carry average is eighth overall.

Although H-M-S featured a run-oriented offense, Ebel ranked eighth in Class A with 16.2 yards per pass completion and 13th with a passer rating of 126.6.

On defense, his 78 total tackles ranked 13th overall in Class A.

The son of Korey and Jonna Ebel, of Hartley, Kooper will continue his football career at Iowa State University where he plans to major in Education.
