Lose to Akron-Westfield in final War Eagle dual of season
Two seniors shot Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn’s best scores at the Class 2A sectional golf meet on May 10 at the Rolling Hills Golf Club.
Lucas Kroese carded H-M-S’s best 18-hole round with a 98 (49-49), while Charlie Conway shot a 105 (54-51).
“I appreciate the four years that Charlie and Lucas gave to the program. It was good for them to finish strong,” said Hawk coach Mark Japenga.
Jack Mastbergen also shot a 105 (52-53), followed by Aiden Bush 107 (56-51), Slayton McCarter 108 (52-56) and Blake Meendering 111 (57-54).
“The kids did a good job of staying focused and doing what they could in scoring. I appreciate their willingness to stay composed and battle,” Japenga noted.
Boyden-Hull (305), OABCIG (318) and Sibley-Ocheyedan (332) qualified to advance to the district meet at Emerald Hills Golf Club. They were followed by West Lyon 342, Hinton 349, Rock Valley 352, Sheldon 404 and H-M-S 415.
Top medalists were Axton Miller of OABCIG, 73; Jackson Keizer of Boyden-Hull, 73; Trey Van Roekel, of Boyden-Hull, 75; and Sam Schnepf of Sibley-Ocheyedan, 75. Other district qualifiers were Kaden Barrett of Hinton, 81; and Korey McKenney of West Lyon, 82.
• Westerners win final dual meet
War Eagle Conference champion Akron-Westfield defeated H-M-S, 160-215, in the final dual meet of the season.
Scores for H-M-S were Mastbergen 48, Conway 51, Kroese and McCarter 58, Meendering 61, and Bush 62.
Medalists were A-W’s Carter Wilken 35, Tatum Wilken 41, Jackson Nuebrand and Michael Swancutt 42.
The Hawks finished in a tie with Trinity Christian and West Sioux for ninth in the conference boys’ dual standings with a 1-9 record.
Other seniors concluding their golf careers at H-M-S are Ethan Baker and Caison Kruger.
