Some last-minute competition

H-M-S teams compete in meet at Sioux Central

Several schools, including Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn, took advantage of some last-minute regular season competition at the Sioux Central coed track and field meet on May 8.

Like the Wolverine Relays a few days earlier, weather interfered and the 4x100 and 4x400 relays were not run. In addition, results of the boys’ 1600-meter run were not counted because of interference by non-runners.

Results that did count for the Hawk boys included a first-place finish by George Vargas in the 3200-meter run (11:42.51), and runner-up finishes by Ethan Diehm in the long jump (20’5-3/4”), Adam Schierholz in the discus (114’5-3/4”) and James Gellerman in the 100-meter dash (:11.85).

Finishing third were Ryan Borden in the 100 (:11.86) and Ryan Grotluschen in the 800 (2:12.90). Bradley Zamudio came in fourth in the 400-meter hurdles (1:04.20), as did Evan Eilers in the discus (111’4”). Carter Dolphin finished sixth in the 400 (1:00.42). Jacob Cates also placed sixth in the shot put (37’8-1/4”) while Damion Hansen was eighth (35’7-1/2”).

In the relays, Borden, Diehm, Zamudio and Gellerman placed third in the 4x200 (1:37.41) and the sprint medley (1:41.18). Ethan Wiersma, David Wetrich, Bryce Dodge and Damian Dodge finished sixth in the distance medley (4:18.89) and Jose Perez, Grotluschen, Blaine Finster and B. Dodge came in seventh in the 4x800 (9:37.67).
