H-M-S golfers finish 6th at girls' regional final

The Class 1A regional final proved to be the last meet of the season for the Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn girls' golf team. The Hawks finished sixth overall at the Spring Valley Golf Course at Livermore on May 17.

"I was very proud of the Hawks in our play at Spring Valley," said Hawk coach Cheryl Kroese. "Overall our first round went very well. We just slipped a little in the second round."

Gracie Knobloch finished five strokes behind the sixth and final individual to qualify for state. Her 18-hole total was 99 (54-45). Other scores for H-M-S were Kinsey Schirmer 103 (56-47), Elise Haack 105 (54-51), Abby Kunzman 127 (66-61) and Morgan Grooters 138 (66-72).

The first and second place teams advance to state. Newell-Fonda won the title (368) and Akron-Westfield was runner-up (403). Other competing teams were Newman Catholic 410, South O'Brien 428, Gehlen Catholic 433, H-M-S 434, Remsen St. Mary's 437 and South Hamilton 448.

"These ladies showed character just like they do every day," Kroese said. "As a coach I am blessed to have gotten to work with them this season."

H-M-S will have some holes to fill in next year's lineup as three of the five players – Grooters, Haack and Kunzman – are seniors.

"We will miss our seniors," Kroese acknowledged. "These three ladies are leaders not only in golf, but in all things they participate in. We wish them well in their future endeavors."
