LaVonne L. Van Houten, 94, Sibley

LaVonne Van Houten, 94, of Sibley and formerly of Melvin, passed away on Tuesday, May 9, 2023, at Sibley Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Sibley. A private family graveside will be held at a later date. Jurrens Funeral Homes assisted with the arrangements.

LaVonne L. (Lux) Van Houten was born Dec. 10, 1928 in Hartley, the daughter of Wilhelm and Edna (Schierholz) Lux. She lived her youth in Hartley where she attended Moneta Consolidated School and graduated from high school in 1946.

She was united in marriage to Roy Van Houten on Feb. 4, 1951, at Trinity Evangelical and Reformed Church in Hartley. They made their home at his parents’ home place north of Melvin where they continued to live until they retired and moved into Sibley in 2002.

She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Sibley. LaVonne enjoyed cooking, sewing, quilting and gardening.

She is survived by her children: Craig Van Houten, of Melvin; Scott Van Houten, of Sanborn; and Kay Christianson and her husband, Dean, of Albert Lea, Minn.; four grandchildren: Justin (Mindi) Van Houten, of Melvin; Jason (Lisa) Christianson, of Colorado; Logan (special friend, Scarlet Louviere), of Melvin; and Brian (Linds) Christianson, of Montana; four great-grandchildren: Ashlyn, Cienna, Caleb and Eli; two sisters: Joyce (Junior) Wagner, of Hartley; and Janet (Dan) Shinkle, of Okoboji; and many nieces and nephews.

LaVonne was preceded in death by her husband, Roy; parents, Wilhelm and Edna; brother, Dale (Darlene) Lux; sister, Adella (Don) Baumgarn; two nephews, Jeffrey Shinkle and Douglas Baumgarn; and cousins, Orlan Lux and Jolene Noviel.
