Hawks drop 2-of-3 at Sheldon softball tourney

Top 15-rated teams hand H-M-S pair of losses

Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn’s losses during the Sheldon softball tourney on June 3 were to teams included in last week’s ratings by the Iowa Girls High School Athletic Union.

West Lyon (3A No. 12) and Sergeant Bluff-Luton (4A No. 15) handed the Hawks identical 10-0 losses, while H-M-S won its game with Sheldon, 6-1.

In the win, the Hawks scored all their runs in the fourth inning. Eliza Tewes contributed two RBI while Morgan Grooters, Gracie Knobloch and Abby Otto each had one.

Tewes finished with three hits, Abby Kunzman and Kinsey Schirmer had two each, and Frankie Mohni, Addy Sheeler and Otto each had one.

Knobloch was the winning pitcher. She gave up five hits and struck out four.

Kamryn Ebel, Cadence Klein, Kunzman, Otto, Schirmer and Tewes all had one hit in H-M-S’s shutout loss to West Lyon.

Schirmer pitched three innings and allowed five runs, five hits and four walks. Ebel allowed three hits and five runs, and walked five in 2-2/3 innings.

Sergeant Bluff-Luton scored in every inning but one to defeat H-M-S, 10-0. The Warriors scored single runs in the first, second and fifth innings, and pulled away with three runs in the fourth and four in the sixth.

Schirmer was the losing pitcher. She gave up 11 hits and walked four.

At the plate, Knobloch finished with two hits while Klein and Otto each had one.
