Named to spring dean’s list at SDSU
More than 3,000 students at the South Dakota State University in Brookings were recognized for outstanding academic performance over the spring 2023 semester by being named to the dean’s list.
To earn dean’s list distinctions in SDSU’s colleges, students must have completed a minimum of 12 credits and must have earned at least a 3.5 GPA on a 4.0 scale. Overall, 3,043 students from 37 states and 20 foreign nations are on the list. More than 1,300 students received a 4.0 GPA, and those are indicated with an asterisk.
The following students from this area earned this academic achievement.
Everly: *Zachary Schoelerman, a student in SDSU’s College of Agriculture, Food and Environmental Sciences.
Greenville: Ben Hargens, a student in SDSU’s College of Agriculture, Food and Environmental Sciences.
Hartley: *Joie Schmidt, a student in SDSU’s College of Nursing.
Melvin: *Ashilyn Hulstein, a student in SDSU’s College of Agriculture, Food and Environmental Sciences.
Sanborn: Reece Petersen, a student in SDSU’s College of Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences.
Morningside Roadman Scholars
Morningside University recently named 258 students as Roadman Scholars in recognition of high academic distinction for the 2022-23 academic year.
Roadman Scholars must be full-time students who have completed at least 45 credits of college work with a cumulative grade point average of 3.76 or above. The award is named in honor of Earl Roadman, who was president of Morningside from 1936 to 1956.
Locally, Thomas R. Heetland, of Hartley, was named a Roadman Scholar.
NWI fishing report
Water temperatures are increasing quickly to the middle to upper 70s. A large mortality event of mostly larger adult panfish has been observed in the Iowa Great Lakes due to spawning stress and quickly warming water temperatures.
Most area water levels are a few inches over crest. The fish bite has been very good across most areas. Most panfish are starting to finish with spawning. Fishing from docks and along weed lines has been good.
East Okoboji Lake: The water temperature was in the upper 70s last Thursday.
Black crappie, fair. Bluegill, fair. Use a small hook and piece of worm. Walleye, good. Yellow perch, fair. Sorting will be needed.
Ingham Lake: Walleye, fair. Anglers have been successful morning and evening.
Lost Island Lake: Water temperatures were in the upper 70s last week. Check out the Iowa Walleye Challenge being held through June 30 for prizes given to anglers catching the most walleye.
Black crappie, good. Walleye, good. Try trolling with spinners over weeds.
Minnewashta Lake: Black crappie, fair. Bluegill, fair. Pumpkinseed, good.
Silver Lake (Dickinson): Courtesy docks are in place.
Walleye, fair. Try trolling with spinners over or off weed lines.
Spirit Lake: Water temperatures were in the mid-70s last Thursday.
Black bullhead, good. Anglers have been very successful fishing the north grade. Black crappie, fair. Many nice-sized fish have been seen lately. Bluegill, good. Try a small hook with a small piece of worm. Walleye, good. Leeches and minnows work well. Anglers have been successful with slip bobbers off points and pulling spinners over vegetation. Yellow perch, fair.
West Okoboji Lake: Water temperatures were in the low 70s last Thursday.
Black crappie, good. Try small jigs tipped with a minnow. Bluegill, good. Walleye, good. Leeches and minnows work well. Yellow perch, fair. Sorting may be needed.
