Law enforcement campaign reminds Iowans to boat sober

A group of state, federal and local law enforcement agencies will partner to focus enforcement of Iowa’s boating while intoxicated law as part of the national Operation Dry Water campaign to draw public attention to the hazards of boating under the influence.

Operation Dry Water will run July 1-3. In 2022, the Iowa Department of Natural Resources and its partners contacted more than 1,425 vessels containing 5,253 boaters resulting in 533 citations or warnings as part of Operation Dry Water.

The DNR has partnered with the U.S. Coast Guard, the Army Corps of Engineers, and local police and sheriff’s departments as part of previous Operation Dry Water campaigns.

According to a news release from the DNR, one-third of all boating fatalities nationally involved alcohol and many of those victims were innocent bystanders.

The field day will focus on timely topics, including updated phosphorus and potassium guidelines, weather forecasts, Mesonet tools, and how drought impacts northwest Iowa soils.

“Farmers and agronomists can plan for a full day of learning at the Research Farm,” said Gentry Sorenson, Extension field agronomist in a news release. “We are offering two field days in one day in an effort to maximize education and networking time.”

Registration opens at 9 a.m., with the program beginning at 9:30 a.m. with “Updated Phosphorous and Potassium Guidelines,” led by Antonio Mallarino, Extension soil fertility specialist.

Following Mallarino, in-field learning will address: “Weather Forecasts and Mesonet Tools,” led by Iowa Environmental Mesonet Representative Daryl Herzmann; “Soil Changes Across the Landscape: How Drought Impacts Northwest Iowa Soils,” led by Amber Anderson, assistant teaching professor at ISU; and “Timely Agronomic Topics of the 2023 Growing Season,” led by Sorenson and Leah Ten Napel, Extension field agronomists.

At the completion of the morning field day, a complimentary noon lunch will be served. Following lunch at 1 p.m., the corn rootworm field day will begin. ISU Entomologists Erin Hodgson and Ashley Dean will provide in-field education using a corn-on-corn demonstration plot.

“The demonstration plot will have non-Bt rootworm corn, SmartStax corn and SmartStax Pro corn with the new RNA-i trait, all with and without insecticides,” Sorenson said. “Roots will be rated so everyone can see the differences in person.”

One IPM CCA credit will be available for the afternoon field day.

Attendance at the morning and/or afternoon field day is free and open to the public. Registration is not needed.

Virtual program about Parkinson’s offered in July

Growing older is the greatest risk factor for acquiring Parkinson’s disease and many people live with symptoms for several years before being diagnosed.

Often people in early stages of Parkinson’s disease assume their symptoms are part of normal aging or are due to other health problems they may have, such as arthritis. However, early Parkinson’s disease symptoms may not be that apparent and may even come and go. Frequently it is the spouse or other relatives who first notice slight problems with a loved one’s movements.

To learn about Parkinson’s disease, its effects and possible treatments, register now to participate in the virtual offering of “A Journey Through Parkinson’s Disease,” an educational series from Iowa State University Extension and Outreach, beginning July 13.

The educational series consists of three, one-hour sessions held once a week. The programs will include interactive lessons, discussions and activities. Sessions are scheduled for July 13, July 20 and July 27 from 10-11 a.m. on Zoom.

There is a no fee to participate. For more information and/or to register, visit https://www.extension.iastate.edu/humansciences/parkinsons.
