1998: Hartley joins 3 other towns on Community Cable Television Agency

Some of the hottest weather of the year was experienced in the Hartley area as temperatures soared over the 100 degree mark. There was some concern that continued heat without rain would cause damage to a very promising looking corn crop.
With the street resurfacing crew completing several blocks daily, the work of resurfacing Hartley’s streets was progressing nicely. The hot weather, so undesirable in other respects, was ideal for that type of work.
Miss Luella Specht, the primary supervisor for O’Brien County, was making plans for the coming school year. The county board of education employed her to help strengthen the curriculum and to advise superintendents concerning the latest trends in elementary education.

The Hartley community was shocked when word was received of an accident which hospitalized Dr. Ivan E. Brown. He had been kicked in the face by a horse. After emergency treatment in Hartley, Dr. Brown was taken to a Sioux City hospital where he underwent surgery.
The Farmers Mutual Insurance Association of O’Brien County and Treimer’s Insurance Agency moved into the new building located on the corner formerly occupied by the Park Hotel. There was still some office equipment to be delivered and a few finishing touches remained on the building.
The closing out sale at Feller’s Grocery Store in Hartley was continuing. Mr. and Mrs. Pete Feller planned to move to Remsen where Mr. Feller was joining his son, Pete Feller, Jr., in the automobile business.

Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn Elementary kicked off the school year with a Western Roundup. The theme was in conjunction with the reading program activities for the coming year. Principal Rod Patton grilled hot dogs and Dale Lux brought in his team of horses for the children.
Eleven youngsters from the Hartley area raised $500 in the Swim for Heart on behalf of the American Heart Association. Ten of the youngsters participated in the swimming events at the Hartley pool. The events included relay and raft races and several pool games.
Hartley’s participation in creating a joint cable television agency was affirmed, as the city council authorized signing of the final agreement establishing the Community Cable Television Agency of O’Brien County. Other participating cities were Paullina, Primghar and Sanborn.
