Hawk boys come close to winning title at home meet

Sioux Central runners were just a bit too fast for Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn to catch in the boys' team race of the H-M-S cross country meet. The meet was held Sept. 18 at Sanborn.

The Rebels won the meet with 40 points and the Hawks were a close second with 45. MMCRU and George-Little Rock/Central Lyon rounded out the team scoring with 63 and 66 points, respectively.

George Vargas led H-M-S with a sixth-place finish, running a time of 18:49. Damian Dodge placed 10th, 20:10; Aiden Bush was 11th, 20:11; Ryan Grotluschen finished 14th, 20:52; Blaine Finster was 18th, 21:15; and Easton Teal placed 26th, 23:57.

The H-M-S girls finished fourth in the team standings with 100 points. Hinton scored 35 to win the team title, edging runner-up Sioux Central by one. GLR/CL was third with 50.

Individual results for H-M-S were Lexi Croatt, 15th, 24:27; Gracie Knobloch, 19th, 26:00; Jocelyn Abonce, 23rd, 27:53; Kamryn Ebel, 24th, 28:31; and Clara Funk, 25th, 29:47.

Kamrynn Visser competed in the girls' JV race and placed 15th in 34:30. H-M-S boys' JV competitors were Carter Dolphin, fourth, 26:27; and Moises Gonzalez, ninth, 28:33.

H-M-S started off the day with a win, as Viviana Delacruz came in first in the middle school girls' race in a time of 10:41. Ashlynn Verrips placed 13th, 15:40; and Nieme Radtke was 15th, 16:02.

Middle school boys' runners were Karter Zimmer, 11th, 10:52; James Carlin, 12th, 10:52; and Dylan Boynton, 14th, 11:47.

The Hawks will compete in the South O'Brien meet at Paullina on Sept. 28.
