1948: Queen candidates named at Moneta HS

• Oct. 1, 1948

Students at Moneta High School voted for their carnival queen candidates. Those selected were Peggy Kriens, freshman; Delores Kriens, sophomore; Janet Bobolz, junior; and Marianne Meyer, senior. Each queen candidate had a campaign manager.

Of unusual interest among lovers of music was the announcement that Bohumir Kryl and his all-girl symphony orchestra was to present a concert at the Hartley school. The Czech conductor had toured the country with his famous orchestra for 38 years.

Thirty neighbors and relatives gathered at the Wilbur Dickman farm southeast of Melvin for a combining and plowing bee. Fifty acres of soybeans were combined and the ground was disked and plowed. The bee was organized by Orlo Jordan due to sickness in the Dickman home.

• Oct. 4, 1973

Hartley’s entry in the Iowa Community Betterment Contest was selected for final judging. The scrapbook prepared by the Community Improvement Committee recorded various community projects that had been undertaken by a cross section of Hartley’s citizens.

The city council adopted an ordinance raising the salaries of Hartley’s mayor and council members. The mayor’s salary was set at $1,200 per year and council members were to be paid $12 per meeting. The new rates would not go into effect until Jan. 1, 1974.

M. Peter Hart, executive director of Upper Des Moines Opportunity, met with city officials and members of the Happy Hearts to discuss the possibility of transportation for senior citizens in O’Brien County. Funding for the project would come from the balance of revenue sharing monies received by the county.

• Oct. 8, 1998

The board of the Hartley Public Library was awarded a $2,500 grant to hire a library consultant. That person would provide professional assistance to plan for a new library. Board members strongly believed that the need for a new facility was great. Grant funds had to be expended by July 15, 1999. The city was still working to acquire property on Central Avenue to be used as a site for a new library.

Katie Stanley and Bruce Naber were crowned Homecoming queen and king at Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn. The other royalty candidates were Jodi Epping, Erin Hobson, Alma Donkersloot, Jason Freed, Ben Otto and Jason Noble. The Hawks won the annual Homecoming football game, defeating Sibley-Ocheyedan by a final score of 16-0.
