• Semi overturns west of Hartley

Zachary Espey, 30, of May City, was eastbound on Highway 18/320th Street, two miles west of Hartley at 11:20 a.m. on Sept. 22, when the 1993 Freightliner semi-tractor and grain trailer he was driving overturned on its roof in the east ditch of Tyler Avenue.

According to the O’Brien County Sheriff’s Office, Espey stated he saw a pickup coming up behind him at a high rate of speed which caused him to try to make the turn at a speed too fast for the semi to handle. Dried distillers grains in the trailer spilled into the ditch.

Espey was taken to Sanford Sheldon Hospital by Hartley Ambulance. Damage to the Freightliner was estimated at $50,000. Espey was cited for Failure to Reduce Speed to Reasonable and Proper Rate.
