A Sanborn man was seriously injured in a two-vehicle accident that occurred at an uncontrolled intersection at 10:42 a.m. on Oct. 7.
The Iowa State Patrol reported that Jeffrey Gerritson, 61, of Sanborn, was driving a 2009 Ram 2500 eastbound on 310th Street. He failed to yield to Kevin Gonnerman, 55, of Sanborn, who was driving a 2011 GMC Sierra northbound on Tanager Avenue.
Gonnerman suffered serious injuries and was taken to Sanford Sheldon Medical Center and then transferred to Sanford Medical Center at Sioux Falls, S.D. He was not wearing a seatbelt. The report did not list any injuries to Gerritson.
The crash is still under investigation.
• Charges filed in sexual assault case
Galvin Nelson, 30, of Royal, was arrested by the Clay County Sheriff’s Office on Oct. 3. He was charged with two counts of Sexual Abuse-2nd degree.
The charges stem from an investigation that began on Aug. 13 when deputies were called to the Emergency Room of Spencer Hospital for a report of a 4-year-old child who had allegedly been sexually assaulted.
• Accused of animal neglect
The Clay County Sheriff’s Office has charged Brent Svuba, 39, of Laurens, with Livestock Neglect, a serious misdemeanor. Svuba was cited and released with a court date.
The sheriff’s office was contacted on Sept. 20 about cattle in a pasture near Webb that appeared to be thin and had no water available. An investigation discovered that two of the cattle had died from lack of nourishment and water. The surviving cattle were moved to another location.
• Auger strikes electric lines
Power lines at two locations near Sheldon were struck by the auger of a feed truck at 11:35 a.m. Sept. 29.
The O’Brien County Sheriff’s Office reported that Trevor John Schroeder, 26, of Remsen, forgot to stow the auger of the 2012 Freightliner truck. The auger struck a powerline owned by MidAmerican Energy at 3442 Nettle Ave., causing power to be interrupted at that location. The auger also struck powerlines owned by North West REC at 3512 Nettle Ave. The lines broke away from a transformer, cutting off power at that location and damaging a yard light.
Schroeder was not injured. There was no damage to the Freightliner; however, damage to the REC powerlines was estimated at $4,000 and damage to the MidAmerican Energy line was estimated at $500. The value of the yard light owned by Claude Struve, of Sheldon, was estimated at $200.
• Combine destroyed by fire
The Hartley Fire Department responded to a call of a combine fire at 2888 Wilson Avenue, northeast of Hartley, at 2 p.m. on Oct. 5.
The fire started in the rear of the combine. Due to dust and chaff, the combine was engulfed in flames and bean stubble started on fire. The fire was contained to the harvested area of the field.
The fire is believed to have started in dust around the exhaust pipe. The combine was a total loss.
• Water poured into combine fuel tank
The Clay County Sheriff’s Office received a report on Oct. 3 that approximately 17 gallons of water had been dumped into the fuel tank of a combine. The combine was parked in the vicinity of the 3100 mile of 450th Street, near Webb.
Anyone with information regarding the incident should contact the sheriff’s office.
