Serving O'Brien & Clay Counties

Absentee voting starts next week

City and school elections set for Nov. 7

Voters interested in voting absentee for the Nov. 7 city-school election may file requests for absentee ballots with their county's auditor's office.

Voters wishing to receive a ballot by mail for the election need to complete an absentee ballot request form and return it to their county's auditor's offices before 5 p.m. on Monday, Oct. 23:

• Clay County – 300 West 4th Street, Suite 4, Spencer, IA 51301;

• O'Brien County – 155 S Hayes Ave., PO Box 380, Primghar, IA 51245;

• Osceola County – 300 7th St., Sibley, IA 51249.

In-person absentee voting will be available at your county's auditor's office beginning Wednesday, Oct. 18 through Monday, Nov. 6, during normal business hours of 8 a.m.-4:30 p.m. Curbside voting will also be available.

Absentee ballot request forms can be found on your local county auditor's website. They may also be requested by calling the auditor's office. Forms must include the date the request is signed.

You may receive multiple absentee ballot request forms from political groups, candidates and other private organizations, but only one absentee request form needs to be turned in to your county's auditor's office.

Voter pre-registration deadline is Oct. 23

The deadline to pre-register to vote in the City-School Election is Monday, Oct. 23, at 5 p.m. If an eligible elector is not already registered to vote, they may do so in one of the following ways:

• Register to vote by mail – Voter registration forms are available on the Iowa Secretary of State's website: sos.iowa.gov/elections/voterinformation/voterregistration.html. The completed form should be delivered or mailed to your county's auditor's office.

• Register to vote in person at your county's auditor's office.

• Register to vote online – Voters may go to https://sos.iowa.gov/ and follow the online voter registration link. An Iowa driver's license or non-operator ID is required for online registration.

Eligible electors may also register to vote on Election Day with both proof of identity and proof of residency. This "Same Day Voter Registration" procedure may slow up the voting experience for voters choosing to wait until Election Day to register and vote at the polling site.

Voters do not need to pre-register before every election. You only need to pre-register if you have moved or have a name change. If you have questions about your voter status, please call your county's auditor's office.
