Best serving night fuels Hawk sweep of H-LP
A fast start and excellent serving against Harris-Lake Park helped Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn's volleyball team get back into the win column on Oct. 3.
The 25-17, 25-8, 25-13 victory at Lake Park was the Hawks' first in over two weeks, and improved their War Eagle Conference record to 2-5.
"We came out strong," Hawk coach Cheryl Kroese observed. "Our serving was the best it's been all year as we recorded 17 aces on the night."
Frankie Mohni, Moriah Otto, Kinsey Schirmer and Eliza Tewes each had four aces. The Hawks' strong serving allowed them to string together several scoring runs.
"We jumped out to a lead in the first set, held onto it and put the ball down when we needed to," Kroese said. "From there we just got stronger in sets 2 and 3."
The Hawks led from the start in the first set and went on a 15-0 run to take control of the second. H-LP took its first lead in the final set, but H-M-S would rally to seal the win.
Leading servers were Tewes 19-of-20, Schirmer 14-of-14, Kylee Schiphoff 13-of-14, Otto 12-of-12 and Mohni 8-of-11.
Abby Douma led H-M-S with nine kills and two solo blocks. Schiphoff had five kills and a block, and Tewes added two kills.
The Wolves were inconsistent at the net, committing 25 attack errors while only recording 14 kills. That limited the number of dig opportunities for H-M-S. Abigail Otto and Schirmer each had five, while Kya Christopherson, Lindsey Van Es, Mohni and Schiphoff all had two.
• Win once at H-LP tourney
Results of previous matches proved to be harbingers of things to come at the Harris-Lake Park tournament on Oct. 7.
Rock Valley had swept the Hawks in their own tournament last month, and they did it again by scores of 21-6, 21-17. In the next pool match, H-M-S swept H-LP for the second time by scores of 21-10, 21-10.
In a matchup of second-place teams from each pool, George-Little Rock earned its second win of the season over the Hawks. H-M-S took the first set (21-14), but lost the second (15-21) and third (8-15).
The Hawks recorded 37 kills overall, led by Schiphoff with 14, Douma with nine, M. Otto with seven and Tewes with six. Mohni recorded 32 set assists.
Schiphoff had three solo blocks on defense. Leaders in digs were Tewes 14, A. Otto 13, Schirmer and Van Es 12, and Mohni 10.
Serving leaders were Schiphoff 20-of-21, Schirmer 23-of-25, Mohni 19-of-22, M. Otto and Tewes 12-of-13, and A. Otto 12-14. Schiphoff scored six aces, Mohni had five, and A. Otto and Schirmer each had three.
H-M-S (6-14, 2-5) hosts Akron-Westfield on Oct. 12 to close out the regular season. Pairings for the Class 2A regional tournament are highlighted elsewhere in this issue.
