1948: Hartley hosts Fall Appreciation Days

Sixty pies were distributed at the Council Oak store in Hartley during a demonstration of how to prepare apple pie with Becky Crocker Apple Pyequick. Jack Harmon, a representative of General Mills, was the presenter. The pie distribution was the fastest of any Council Oak store in Iowa or Nebraska.
In spite of the fact that farmers throughout the area were busily engaged in corn picking, good-sized crowds attended the Fall Appreciation Days in Hartley. Events included a pet, bicycle and wagon parade, produce contest, pancake feed and carnival rides.
F.A. Albright was on the Chicago market with four loads of Angus heifers. Two loads, 59 head, topped the market at $34 cwt. The cattle were purchased by the Armour Packing Co. for a big chain store in various parts of the United States.
• Oct. 18, 1973
Over 300 women brought clothing and household goods for the South Dakota reservations during the Eighth District Women’s Club Convention held in Hartley. The drive was sponsored by the Tritonia Junior Federated Women’s Club. The National Guard, of Sheldon, transported the donated items.
Hartley’s Central Avenue was filled with cars and pedestrian traffic was particularly heavy between the Farmers Mutual Insurance building and the Hartley Drug and Fabric Center. Both hosted open houses as did Treimer’s Insurance Agency, which had offices in the Farmers Mutual building.
The drama department at Hartley High School was presenting “A Thurber Carnival” at the elementary auditorium. The play written by James Thurber featured 14 small scenes. Ten students made up the cast which shifted characters throughout the show.

Lt. Rodney Jenkins, son of Mr. and Mrs. Warren Jenkins, retired after 20 years of service in the United States Navy. Jenkins enlisted in 1978. Following his retirement, he accepted a position as a research scientist with the Battelle Memorial Institute in Columbus, Ohio.
Three exchange students, all from Germany, were attending Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn High School during the 1998-99 school year. Isabell Miller, 17, was living with Merlyn and Evelyn Feddersen; Nell Werner, 16, was living with Dave and Becky Schroeder; and Moritz Winkler, 15, was living with Edith Vanden Berg.
DLR Group presented an updated schematic design for additions to H-M-S High School. One major change was to build four classrooms on the west side of the building in a “pod” configuration rather than in a straight row.
