• Charges filed after traffic stop
The Clay County Sheriff’s Office reported a vehicle was stopped for speeding in the 2800 mile of Highway 18 on Oct. 11. Two occupants were allegedly drinking alcohol. A search of the vehicle discovered an open container of beer, marijuana and drug paraphernalia.
The driver, Alex Clark, 26, of Emmetsburg, was charged with OWI-2nd offense, Possession of a Controlled Substance-Marijuana (third offense) and Possession of Drug Paraphernalia.
Kinzer Gross, 25, of Sacramento, Calif., was arrested on a warrant for failure to appear in court on a charge of Domestic Abuse Assault. He was also charged with Public Intoxication, Open Container and Drug Paraphernalia.
Both men were booked into the Clay County jail.
• Blown tire leads to accident
The O’Brien County Sheriff’s Office reported that Tyler Daniel McDonald, 41, of Sanborn, was driving east in the 5500 mile of 310th Street, at 4 a.m. on Sept. 23. He stated that his boat trailer blew a tire which made it difficult to control his vehicle. McDonald overcorrected, causing him to drive his 2023 Chevrolet Silverado into a guardrail on the north side of the road.
McDonald was not injured. Damage to the Silverado was listed at $3,000. The bridge guardrail, owned by O’Brien County, sustained $500 in damage.
• Collide in intersection
Two vehicles collided at an intersection at 5:10 p.m. on Oct. 3. According to the O’Brien County Sheriff’s Office, a 2011 Ford F150 driven by Desiree Rose Wollan, 33, of Canton, S.D., was westbound on 390th Street when she stopped at an intersection. She was distracted while looking at her navigation system and failed to see a 2018 Buick Enclave driven by Marvin Leslie Einck, 72, of Primghar, turning left onto 390th Street from Silver Avenue. The two vehicles collided in the intersection.
No injuries were reported. Damage estimates were $15,000 for the Enclave and $8,000 for the F150. Wollan was cited for Failure to Obey Stop Sign and Yield Right of Way.
• Runs into back of vehicle
An accident occurred at 5:45 a.m. on Oct. 4, in the 5900 mile of U.S. Highway 18/320th Street. A 2012 Ford Focus driven by Paige Marie Hilde, 23, of Milford, and a 1980 Oldsmobile Cutlass driven by Cullin Christopher Foreman, 30, of Hartley, were both westbound. The O’Brien County Sheriff’s Office reported that Foreman either fell asleep or was inattentive as his vehicle collided with the back of the Hilde vehicle. The vehicles stuck together and entered the south ditch.
Neither driver was injured. Damage to the Focus was estimated at $10,000 while the Cutlass had $2,000 in damage. Foreman was cited for Failure to Maintain Control and Failure to Provide Proof of Financial Liability-Accident.
• Dust obscures driver’s vision
The O’Brien County Sheriff’s Office reported that a 2000 Chevrolet Silverado driven by Ana Gabriela Tovar, 16, of Sanborn, was westbound on 330th Street at 3:45 p.m. on Oct. 10. She was driving too fast and entered a dust cloud created on the dry gravel road by a 2007 Freightliner tractor/semi-trailer driven by Bryon Douglas Storm, 71, of Sanborn. Tovar’s 2000 Chevrolet Silverado ran into the rear of the honey wagon pulled by the Freightliner.
No injuries were reported. Damage estimates were $10,000 for the honey wagon and $5,000 for the Silverado. Tovar was cited for Violation of Conditions of Restricted License and Failure to Reduce Speed to Reasonable and Proper Rate.
