1948: Hartley fullback receives area accolades

• Oct. 28, 1948

Grizzly Gus Grotefelt, Heavy Fritz Baumeister and Slim Alfred Schoelerman returned from Sheridan, Wyo. with three fine bucks. They killed their game in record time, guided by “Deadeye” Dick Theisen. The men were guests of Mrs. Emma Wieditz at Sheridan.

Approximately 180 young people gathered for a Halloween hard time party, sponsored by the Friday Club. Dancing to the music of Alvin Frick’s orchestra provided the background for the evening’s entertainment. Use of the hall was donated by the American Legion.

Roger Luedke, Hartley fullback, was named “Athlete of the Week” on a radio program presented at Sioux City. The program was under the direction of Les Davis, former Morningside mentor, and covered northwest Iowa and parts of Nebraska and South Dakota.

• Oct. 25, 1973

Mrs. Ingwer L. Hansen, of Hartley, was elected, in absentia, to a two-year term as national vice president of the National T.T.T. Society. She was completing a term as national treasurer and had also served as state president.

Hartley merchants reported the Harvest Festival and Moonlight Madness promotions were highly successful. Several merchants reported the biggest day ever on Friday and all were well-pleased with the results of the sales events advertised.

Three new directors were elected to the board of the Hartley Chamber of Commerce. Chosen to serve two-year terms were Howard Borchard, Harold Hoftyzer and Donald Treimer. Business at the Chamber’s fall general meeting included reports and an outline of plans for Christmas.

• Oct. 29, 1998

Brooke Graves, daughter of Harry and Eleanor Graves of Sanborn, exhibited three head of Jersey dairy cattle at the 1998 Ak-Sar-Ben National 4-H Livestock Exhibition. She won overall Junior and Reserve Junior Champion with two heifers, and honorable mention in the overall Junior Championship with a dry cow.

Seven instrumental students at Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn Middle School were selected to participate in the Northwest Iowa Junior High Honor Band Festival. Those chosen were David Coulter, Jill Dykstra, Jacob Elgersma, Caleb Funke, Kari Luenberger, Cassi Miller and Kent Wallinga.

Ron Wilson was appointed Executive Vice President of United Community Bank. Wilson was located at the Hartley bank location and was anxious to become active in the community and meet the people of the area.
