1973: Turkey attemps Thanksgiving escape

• Nov. 25, 1948

The Hartley Future Farmers sponsored a high school party at the Legion Hall. The main event of the evening was the crowning of the Harvest Queen, Joanne McCarty. She was also the chapter sweetheart for the year.

The O’Brien County Legion meeting was held in Hartley. John Walters, well-known Sheldon resident, was elected commander of the county Legion to fill out the unexpired term of Dr. A.M. Schierholz, formerly of Paullina.

Approximately 250 Chamber of Commerce members and their guests enjoyed the annual guest night dinner-dance. During the entertainment many laughs were evoked by the “acting” of the Little Theater Guild Players and the singing of the Rusty Hinge Boys.

• Nov. 22, 1973

Merchandise valued at over $400 was stolen from a storeroom at Dass True Value Hardware in Hartley. Entry was gained by forcing the front door and breaking a bolt. Items taken were Christmas lights, boxes of lamps and indoor-outdoor lights, and two blenders.

A turkey wandered into Pleasant View Cemetery but before the sexton, Stan Warburton, could locate a catcher, the bird had crossed over to the Lloyd Newkirk farm. Shortly after they caught it, Tony Johnson arrived to retrieve the turkey which had escaped from its cage. Since Thanksgiving was only a few days away, it was the last adventure for the wandering turkey.

The four-plex constructed in northeast Hartley by Lyle L. Shinkle was nearing completion, with one unit ready for occupancy. There were three two-bedroom apartments in the building and a one-bedroom unit. A garage with a stall for each unit was located behind the four-plex.

• Nov. 26, 1998

The Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn Athletic Boosters presented at $2,000 donation to the H-M-S Track Club. That group was organizing the planning and fundraising for an all-weather track at the high school athletic field. Track club officers were Cheryl Kroese, secretary-treasurer; Bob Epping, vice president; and Gale Vetter, president.

Mackenzie Evenson, Kalyn Van Engen and Anna Wacker, students at H-M-S Middle School, were selected to perform in the Opus fifth and sixth grade elementary honor choir at Ames.

Northwest Iowa cattlemen attended a district meeting sponsored by the Iowa Cattlemen’s Association at Pete’s in Hartley. Reports were given on the Iowa Beef Industry Council, state and national checkoff programs, and legislative successes including approval of loan deficiency payments for corn silage and ground ear corn.
