Winter sports seasons get started

Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn's winter sports seasons got underway Nov. 21 when the girls' basketball team played at Sioux Central. Results will be reported in next week's issue.

The first girl/boy basketball doubleheader of the season is scheduled for Nov. 28 when the Hawks play at George-Little Rock.

H-M-S bowlers' first competition is also scheduled for Nov. 28 when they host MMCRU at Locomotion Lanes in Sanborn.

The Okoboji/HMS boys' wrestlers hit the mats for the first time during a JV/V triangular on Nov. 30 at Milford.

Okoboji/HMS girls' wrestlers open season

The Okoboji/HMS girls' wrestling team opened the season with a double dual on Nov. 14. The Pioneers defeated Emmetsburg, 36-33, and lost to Sioux Central, 54-24.

They also competed in the Lady E-Hawk Invitational on Nov. 18. Miley Appeldorn, of H-M-S, placed seventh at 125 pounds. She lost by fall in the quarterfinals to Emily Winkel of Central Lyon/GLR (1:29) and to Mackenzie McMahon of Humboldt in the consolation third-round (3:18). Appeldorn won a 6-1 decision over Lucy Doorneweerd of West Lyon in the seventh-place match.

Other place finishers for the Pioneers were Brooke Stockdale, second at 105 pounds; Oakley Wright, fifth at 115; Kimberly Bergeson, fourth at 130; Alayna Alesse, eighth at 140; Avery Ballis, fourth at 140; Shane Cummings, seventh at 145; Avery Wintz, sixth at 170; and Jozlyn Cookinham, first at 190.
