Place finishers at West Lyon Invite
Okoboji/HMS girls' wrestlers participated in the West Lyon Invitational on Nov. 20 at Inwood. Two H-M-S athletes were among the place finishers.
Madi Lauer lost by fall (0:18) to Avery Beissel of Spirit Lake Park in the semifinals at 120 pounds, and won the third-place match by fall (5:28) over Karla Anzua of MOC-Floyd Valley.
Miley Appeldorn, wrestling at 125 pounds, lost by fall (3:47) to Adriana Gutierrez of MOC-FV, won by fall (2:17) over Mia Kraai of Sioux Center in the consolation semifinals and lost the third-place match by fall to Gutierrez (3:47).
Second-place finishers for Okoboji/HMS were Brooke Stockdale at 105 pounds and Dulce Ortega at 120. Placing third were Alayna Alesse at 135, Avery Ballis at 140, Shianne Cummings at 145 and Jennesa Gates at 190. Layla Kalsow finished fourth at 155 pounds.
H-M-S girls lose opener to Rebels
Sioux Central continued its mastery over the Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn girls' basketball team in the opening game of the 2023-24 season. The Rebels ran out to a 49-point halftime lead and cruised to a 76-38 win on Nov. 21 at Sioux Rapids.
The win was the seventh straight for the Rebels (2A No. 12) in the series.
H-M-S trailed 33-8 at the end of the first quarter and 59-10 at the break. The Hawks did outscore Sioux Central by a 28-17 margin in the second half to narrow the final deficit to 38 points.
Scoring for H-M-S were Kylee Schiphoff with 10 points, Abby Douma with nine, Moriah Otto with seven, Gracie Knobloch and Eliza Tewes with three each, and Kamryn Ebel, Frankie Mohni and Addy Sheeler with two points. The Hawks made 14-of-44 shots from the floor (31.8 percent) and only 7-of-21 attempts at the foul line.
H-M-S had a slight 25-22 edge in rebounds, led by Schiphoff with five and Otto, Sheeler and Tewes with four. Mohni had three assists and two steals; Knobloch had three assists; and Otto had two steals. The Hawks committed 31 turnovers.
H-M-S will host varsity doubleheaders with Woodbury Central on Nov. 30 and Trinity Christian on Dec. 1.
