Okoboji/HMS splits duals, finishes sixth at tourney
Okoboji/HMS defeated Graettinger-Terril/Ruthven-Ayrshire for its first dual wrestling win of the season but found the going tougher against Spencer on Nov. 30 at Milford.
The Pioneer topped GT/RA, 42-30. Trailing 15-12, Okoboji/HMS won five of the next seven matches by fall to earn the victory. Spencer concluded the night with a dominating 66-16 win over the Pioneers.
Ethan Wiersma won a pair of matches at 215 pounds. He pinned the Titans' Treyton Kleve in 3:39 and the Tigers' Jake Schipper in 4:52.
James Gellerman, wrestling at 175 pounds, had the Pioneers' quickest pin (0:18) against Luke Malm of GT/RA, and lost by fall to Spencer's Jace Fullhart (4:48).
Nathan Stofferan (113 pounds) won by forfeit against GT/RA and lost by fall to Easton Beehler of Spencer (2:49). Camden Ball (132) lost by fall to Kenny Ness of GT/RA (5:31) and Tanner Pierce of Spencer (1:52). Nathaniel Ball (138) lost a narrow decision to Aaron Wilson of GT/RA (7-6).
Michael Gonnerman was the only other Pioneer to win two matches.
H-M-S's David Wetrich lost by fall in a JV match with Kinnick Peton of GT/RA (3:37). Aidan Espeland was pinned by Tristan Lohman of Spencer (1:49), as was Taylor Dykstra by Mason MacLean of Spencer (1:29).
• Sixth at home tourney
Okoboji/HMS hosted 10 teams for a tournament on Dec. 2 and finished sixth overall.
Fulda/MCC, Minn. topped the standings with 197 points, Garner-Hayfield/Ventura was second with 159 and West Hancock was third with 148. They were followed by West Sioux 142.5, North Union 138, Okoboji/HMS 127, Sibley-Ocheyedan 124, Sioux Central 102.5, GT/RA 83 and Spirit Lake Park 59.
Gellerman was runner-up at 175 pounds, losing to Mike Ohotto, Jr. by fall (0:50) in the championship match. Gellerman had earlier won a 6-2 decision over Aidan Beyer of S-O and an 8-1 decision over Luke Iverson of Fulda/MCC.
Wiersma was also runner-up at 215 pounds. He defeated Tommy Wietzema of S-O (6-4) and lost by fall to Brennan Bollinger of North Union (3:27).
Stofferan, wrestling at 113 pounds, placed third. He lost by fall to Kaleb Feld of GHV (1:50), but came back to edge Jackson Van Der Sloot of S-O (3-2) and Leonardo Lopez of West Sioux (5-2).
Other place-finishers were Tyce Hanson, second at 132 pounds; Nathaniel Franklin, third at 165; Michael Gonnerman, fourth at 126; Tyler Pyle, seventh at 150; and Dillon Wittrock, eighth at 144.
The Pioneers will host a double dual on Dec. 7 and compete in the Emmetsburg tournament on Dec. 9.
