Opponents take advantage of boys' scoring droughts
A lengthy scoring drought turned Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn's early lead into a 20-point deficit against Trinity Christian. The result was a 65-31 loss in boys' basketball action on Dec. 1 in Hartley.
An 11-3 run in the first quarter gave H-M-S a 14-8 lead. But starting late in the opening period, Trinity Christian went on an 18-0 run that put them in front, 26-14. A basket by Josh Cruz with under three minutes to go in the second quarter ended the drought, but the Tigers would hold a 32-19 lead at the half.
Despite only scoring eight points in the third quarter, Trinity Christian extended their advantage to 19 points as H-M-S was limited to two free throws. The Hawks scored 14 points to close out the game, but the Tigers continued to pull away for the 26-point win.
Bradley Van Beek led H-M-S with nine points, Lawton Schiphoff scored eight, George Vargas scored seven, Jayden Leth scored five, Zac Pearson scored four and Cruz scored two. The Hawks made 12-of-54 shots from the floor.
Leth also had seven rebounds and two steals; Vargas had five rebounds, three blocks and two steals; Van Beek had five rebounds and two blocks; and Alex Billings added three rebounds.
Dustin Hoksbergen scored 30 points to lead Trinity Christian.
• Lose to Woodbury Central
With four players scoring in double figures, Woodbury Central had more than enough offensive firepower to hand H-M-S a 57-44 loss on Nov. 30 in Hartley.
The Wildcats broke out to an 18-11 lead in the first quarter and extended it to 32-19 at halftime. Woodbury Central added five points to the lead in the third quarter and the Hawks outscored them by five to make the second half a draw.
Josh Cruz's 15 points led H-M-S. Alex Billings and George Vargas scored seven points, Jayden Leth and Lawton Schiphoff each scored six and Bradley Van Beek added three. The Hawks connected on 17-of-48 shot attempts from the floor.
Rebounding leaders were Billings with seven, Schiphoff with five and Cruz and Leth with three. Leth also contributed four steals; Schiphoff had three assists and three steals; Cruz and Van Beek each had two assists and two steals; and Billings had two steals.
Joe DeStigter led Woodbury Central with 15 points.
H-M-S (0-3) takes on Remsen St. Mary's at Remsen on Dec. 8, and also plays at Graettinger-Terril/Ruthven-Ayrshire on Dec. 11 and at Akron-Westfield on Dec. 12.
