Okoboji/HMS finishes fourth at Spencer meet
The Okoboji/HMS girls' wrestling team earned a quick 60-0 varsity dual win on Dec. 7 at Milford. Only two matches were wrestled, so the Pioneers scored most of their points against Sioux Center due to forfeits.
Kimberly Bergeson and Avery Ballis won the two competitive matches by fall.
• Fourth at Spencer Invite
Okoboji/HMS competed at the Spencer Girls' Wrestling Invitational on Dec. 9, finishing fourth as a team.
H-M-S freshman Miley Appeldorn placed fifth at 125 pounds. She won by fall over Michelle Burley of South Central Calhoun (0:38), lost by fall to Breanna Johnson of Spencer (1:37), lost by fall to Moriah Reineke of Graettinger-Terril/Ruthven-Ayrshire (2:52) and won the fifth place match by forfeit.
Madi Lauer competed at 120 pounds. She lost by fall to Zoey Higgins of GT/RA (1:36) and to Emma Bockelman of Canton, S.D. (1:35).
Other Okoboji/HMS place-finishers were Jennesa Gates (170 pounds), first; Dulce Ortega (111), third; Krishauna Allen (155) and Amelia Sirola (235), fifth; Brooke Stockdale (100), sixth; and Mya Whiting (135), seventh.
The Top 5 teams were Spencer 197, Canton 148, MOC-Floyd Valley 140, Boyden-Hull/Rock Valley 137, Okoboji/HMS 118 and GT/RA 113.
Several Pioneers also competed at the Sergeant Bluff-Luton girls' JV tourney on Dec. 4.
Appeldorn placed second, winning her first match by fall in 1:52 but was pinned in 33 seconds by Mariah Barillas of Sioux City West in the title match.
Bergeson placed second in her bracket, Allen and Sirola placed third, and Kadynce College and Whiting placed fourth.
The girls wrap up the pre-Christmas schedule with a double dual on Dec. 17 at Milford.
• High finishes for boys' JV wrestlers at MOC-FV
Okoboji/HMS wrestlers excelled at the MOC-Floyd Valley boys' JV tourney on Dec. 4.
Seven H-M-S wrestlers participated, led by a pair of champions. Camden Ball won the 129-133 bracket, edging Alex Van Zee of MOC-FV (5-3) and pinning Kyler Tendal of Sergeant Bluff-Luton (2:55). To win the 211-218 bracket, David Wetrich pinned Henry Retleff of Cherokee (1:32) and won a 4-0 decision over Andrew Harp of MOC-FV.
Jose Perez was runner-up in the 126-130 bracket. He won a decision over Xander Waldstein of Sioux Central (8-5) and lost by fall to Dayton Strohman of Emmetsburg (3:52). Mykle Meyers won a decision over Sawyer Wolfswinkel of Sioux Center (7-5) and lost by fall to Ayden Miller of Sheldon/South O'Brien (5:42) to place second in the 182-188 bracket.
Aidan Espeland finished fourth in the 142-143 bracket. He lost by fall to Karson Hoogendoorn of Boyden-Hull/Rock Valley (5:49) and to Mason Sitzmann of LeMars (3:44). Austin Greer placed fourth at 119-120, losing by fall to Robert Frederick of Emmetsburg (4:34) and a major decision to Hunter Lloyd of Storm Lake (12-4).
Also finishing fourth was Easton Teal at 135-137. He lost a major decision to Tyler Bauer of Storm Lake (16-3) and by fall to Lane Waddle of Sioux Center (1:34).
Several other Pioneers competed, led by Zack Stecker, first at 122-125, and Tristan Strantz, runner-up at 158-163.
