Warriors dominate opening Siouxland mat dual

Okoboji/HMS defeats LeMars, finishes 10th at Emmetsburg

The Siouxland Conference wrestling dual season started with some tough competition for Okoboji/HMS. Sioux Center won nine matches by fall to earn a commanding 58-21 win on Dec. 7 at Milford.

H-M-S senior Ethan Wiersma (215 pounds) lost an 8-0 major decision to Brodie Van Regenmorter; James Gellerman (175) was pinned by Reid Hulshof (0:55); Austin Greer (120) lost by fall to Eddie Topete (1:35); and Bryce Ortega (285) lost by fall to Jacques Zomermaand (4:19). Nathan Stofferan received a forfeit at 113 pounds.

The Pioneers' Tyce Hanson won by fall at 132 pounds and Nathaniel Franklin won a 6-0 decision at 165.

Things went better for Okoboji/HMS in a non-conference dual with LeMars, winning by a margin of 51-24.

Wiersma pinned Kaleb Breuer in 3:26, and Gellerman, Greer and Stofferan won by forfeit. Ortega lost a 4-2 decision to Jaxen Hoag.

H-M-S wrestlers also competed in extra matches. David Wetrich lost by fall (1:43) to Asher Moss and Aidan Espeland lost by fall (4:42) to Matthew Sitzmann, both of LeMars. Mykle Meyers lost by fall (1:12) to Jakson Gillespie of Sioux Center.

• Compete at Emmetsburg

Okoboji/HMS wrestlers also competed at the Bob Roethler Invitational, hosted by Emmetsburg on Dec. 9.

Gellerman placed third in the 175 pound bracket. He won by fall over Luke Malm of Graettinger-Terril/Ruthven-Ayrshire (0:32) and over Jayden Kreitlow of Eagle Grove (1:17). He was then pinned by Jace Nelson-Brown of Emmetsburg (1:53) but came back to pin Brody Robertson of Hampton-Dumont/CAL (1:21) and win a 7-5 decision over Beau Kaufman of Lake Mills.

Stofferan did not place at 113-pounds. He won by fall over Deforrest Snow of Mason City (3:36), lost by fall to Austin Hansen of Estherville-Lincoln Central (0:28) and lost an 8-4 decision to CJ Rodriguez of Emmetsburg.

Ortega wrestled at 285 pounds. He lost a 6-5 decision to Alex Kenward of Mason City and by fall to Nathan Adams of Emmetsburg (3:37).

Other Pioneers who placed were Tyce Hanson (132), third; Nathaniel Franklin (165), sixth; and Brennan Baschke (144), Tyler Pyle (150) and Alex Rouse (157), eighth.

Okoboji/HMS finished 10th among the 17 teams, scoring 81 points. Hampton-Dumont/CAL won the title with 222 points and Lake Mills was second with 202.

The Pioneers will host Central Lyon/G-LR and West Lyon in a conference double dual on Dec. 14 and compete in a tournament at Spencer on Dec. 16 to conclude the pre-Christmas schedule.
