Hawk bowlers score well in meet with West Sioux

Scores continued to improve for Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn’s bowling teams as they head into the holiday break. Competing against West Sioux, the Hawk varsity teams were both victorious on Dec. 12 at Hawarden.

The H-M-S girls defeated West Sioux by a cumulative score of 2,193-1,779.

“The girls came away with a win in their match by 414 pins and with improved scores,” said Hawk coach Julia Meyer. “I am so happy and proud of their commitment and progress.”

Singles’ game scores were Heather Elgersma, 160-158 318; Jordan Lux, 171-124 295; Meghan Larson, 128-164 292; Annika Overmire, 155-129 284; Lillian Van Loon, 142-128 270; Keyanna Brower, 142-118 260; and Lexi Croatt, 116-96 212.

Scores of the five Baker games were 166, 132, 133, 156 and 157.

“We want to wish Meghan Larson good luck in her future as she is graduating in December and will not be able to participate after that. We’ll miss her leadership,” Meyer said.

The varsity boys also won with ease, outscoring the Falcons by a 2,661-2087 margin.

“They kept focus on getting their spares even when the strikes weren’t falling,” Meyer noted. “Spares are the name of the game, as they say.”

Individual game scores were Riley Russell, 221-179 400; Caleb Aaron, 173-201 374; Jack Mastbergen, 168-191 359, Dawson Niichel, 178-161 339; Eli Mastbergen, 170-162 332; and Damian Dodge, 123-176 299. Baker game scores were 144, 177, 166, 224 and 146.

Meyer was also pleased with the JV boys’ scores. Two of the H-M-S teams were above West Sioux’s varsity scores and the third team was only 105 pins from doing that.

“The JV boys have upped their games also. We have a lot of talented bowlers,” she said.

JV1 game scores were Noah Niichel, 158-168 326; Graham Lux, 142-160 302; Brennan Stoltz, 145-156 301; Owen Tifft, 147-151 298; Skyler Shaffer, 144-152 296; and Ian Werkmeister, 123-118 241. Baker game scores were 153, 135, 173, 139 and 116.

The JV2 individual scores were Luke Dagel, 184-130 314; Aiden Nitzel, 160-145 305; Braden Niichel, 163-139 302; Brett Stoltz, 153-124 277; Moises Gonzalez, 140-99, 239; and Brenden Larson, 70-118 188. Scores for the Baker games were 116, 114, 158, 166 and 118.

JV3 recorded the following scores: Parker Russell, 127-165 292; Ryan Grotluschen, 140-117 257; Blake Essing, 163-88 251; Jackson Brower, 93-125 218; and Hector Diaz, 85-99 184. Their Baker game scores were 139, 147, 117, 152 and 138.

The bowling teams will not compete until Jan. 16 when they host Emmetsburg and West Sioux at Sanborn’s Locomotion Lanes.
