• Couple charged with child endangerment

Two Hartley residents are accused of using marijuana in the presence of a child. The criminal complaint states that Johnathan Peters, 26, and Victoria Barnes, 25, were arrested on Dec. 18 after a child tested positive for THC metabolite, indicating that marijuana may have been used in the home. The adults reportedly admitted to using marijuana daily, but not in the presence of the child.

Peters and Barnes were charged with Neglect or Abandonment of a Dependent Person, a class C felony, and a misdemeanor charge of Child Endangerment. The preliminary hearing is set for Jan. 8. Each was held in the O’Brien County jail on a $10,000 cash or surety bond.

• Accused of stealing from store

Shawna Johnson, 45, of Paullina, was arrested on Dec. 14 after allegedly stealing funds from the Dollar General store in Paullina, where she was employed. According to the complaint, Johnson is accused of transferring over $8,000 in store funds into her PayPal accounts.

She was charged with Theft-2nd Degree, a class D felony. A preliminary hearing was scheduled for Dec. 22 in O’Brien County District Court.

• 2 arrested after traffic stop

Two men were arrested following a traffic stop at 12:30 a.m. on Dec. 16, in the 3000 mile of Highway 71. According to the Clay County Sheriff’s Office, the deputy reported smelling marijuana coming from the vehicle when he made contact with the occupants.

Cameron Reich, 23, of Spencer, was charged with Possession of a Controlled Substance-3rd offense, and Devin Mitchell, 28, of Emmetsburg, was charged with Possession of a Controlled Substance-1st offense. Both were booked into the county jail and have been released on bond.
