H-M-S girls end preholiday schedule with loss to G-LR

Coming off a successful road swing, the Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn girls' basketball team didn't find playing at home to be an advantage. In their final game before the holiday break, the Hawks were defeated by George-Little Rock, 58-26, on Dec. 19.

H-M-S trailed from the start but stayed close through the first five minutes. The Mustangs closed out the opening quarter with a 12-3 run that increased their lead to 18-8, and continued to extend the advantage to 30-13 at halftime.

The Hawks' offensive struggles continued in the second half, as they were held to single-digit scoring in both quarters. Moriah Otto scored all six of H-M-S's points in the third quarter, which ended with G-LR leading by a 44-19 margin. G-LR had a 14-7 scoring advantage in the final period.

Otto scored 12 points to lead H-M-S. Abby Douma, Frankie Mohni and Kylee Schiphoff each scored three points, Eliza Tewes and Lindsey Van Es scored two each, and Gracie Knobloch added a free throw. No other stats were posted as of press deadline.

Four G-LR players scored in double figures, led by Hadley Madsen with 16 points.

H-M-S (4-5, 1-3) is back in action on Jan. 4, hosting a non-conference girls' only game with Unity Christian.
