Ice remains scarce in northwest Iowa
The Iowa DNR last week once again reported unfavorable conditions for ice fishing in northwest Iowa.
Most larger lakes were almost completely open as of last Thursday. Warmer weather and Christmas rain showers knocked back any ice that had been made. Some bays have thicker ice, but ice fishing access can be hard to find.
Anglers are reminded to check ice thickness often if you attempt to go out on the water.

‘Spend Smart. Eat Smart.’ program offered at Sibley
To help individuals learn best practices for eating healthy while staying on a budget, ISU Extension and Outreach will host “Spend Smart. Eat Smart. Good Nutrition on a Budget” on Jan. 22 from 5-6 p.m. at the Sibley Public Library.
“We’ll talk about ways to save money while still eating a healthy, balanced diet,” said Korissa Lassen, Extension human sciences specialist in food and health, in a news release. “We know that the price of groceries can be a real frustration for families and individuals, but there are tools to ensure you are getting the best bang for your buck, so to speak.”
Lassen will lead the program in which participants will learn about a free app/website from ISU Extension and Outreach that can help with grocery list making and grocery shopping. The group will discuss and take part in some hands-on practice related to using grocery store ads, completing a menu plan, writing a grocery list and using unit pricing to select the best buy.
“We’ll learn together and provide everyone with resources to be successful when grocery shopping,” Lassen said.
The program is free and open to all. Prior registration is not needed. Light refreshments will be served.

Home gardening webinar series offered
The Iowa State University Extension and Outreach Master Gardener program will again host the Home Gardening Webinar Series, beginning in January and ending in March. Sessions will take place every Tuesday from 6-7 p.m. Central Time, ending March 12.
Designed for anyone who is interested in gardening or horticulture, the series aims to inspire and educate. Throughout the series participants will hear from experts at Iowa State, Cornell University, Jung Seed, Seed Savers Exchange and the Iowa Department of Agriculture and Land Stewardship. Sessions are free and open to the public. Attendees can register to join through Zoom or join on Facebook Live. Some county Extension offices will also hold in-person showings.
Four sessions in January will cover edible topics including tomato diseases and disorders, grape pruning and canopy management, identifying and managing fruit and vegetable insect pests, and seed saving.
February sessions will focus on environmental factors that can greatly impact gardening success. Topics will include soil health, climate extremes, cover crops for home gardeners, and compost quality and use.
In March the series will conclude with two presentations about landscape design. Both will be led by Lisa Nunamaker, owner of Paper Garden Workshop, and will discuss planning a theme garden and budget garden design.
According to Alicia Herzog, state Master Gardener Coordinator, the Home Gardening Webinar Series is for everyone regardless of gardening experience. The series is a good educational opportunity for existing master gardeners, those interested in becoming master gardeners and those who just want to learn more about these topics.
Zoom registration for the series is available at https://go.iastate.edu/UOOQEJ. To join the Facebook Live, visit the event listing and RSVP as “attending” at https://www.facebook.com/iamastergardeners. Or attend an in-person showing of each program at the Cherokee County Extension Office located at 209 Centennial Drive in Cherokee.
All webinars will be live with question-and-answer at the end. Zoom participation is limited to the first 500 attendees. Attendees will be directed to Facebook Live if the Zoom room is at capacity.
For more information, contact Herzog at (515) 294-3627 or [email protected].
