Camp Autumn fundraiser cancelled

Seasons Center for Behavioral Health and Camp Autumn have cancelled the ice fishing tournament and fundraiser that was scheduled for Saturday, Feb. 10 at Camp Autumn. The decision was made due to the current unseasonably warm temperatures.

“Safety is obviously our No. 1 concern,” said Stephanie Pohar, Seasons Center Vice President of Marketing and Fund Development, in a news release. “Given the current ice conditions and warm weather ahead, we are anticipating the ice to deteriorate even more and we certainly don’t want to take any chances.”

Join in Walk to Valentine for heart health

As Valentine’s Day turns many people’s thoughts to matters of the heart, the health professionals of Spencer Hospital encourage community members to specifically focus on their heart health. To encourage routine fitness walking for healthy hearts, the hospital is inviting community members to join in a fun virtual walk from Spencer to Valentine, Neb.

“A nice, brisk walk is one of the easiest ways to increase your aerobic exercise,” said Jason Trierweiler, Athletic Enhancement and Cardiopulmonary Rehabilitation Director, in a news release. “By walking briskly enough to increase your heart rate, you improve your circulation and lower your blood pressure. Plus, the only equipment required for walking is a comfortable pair of shoes.”

Valentine, Neb., is 331 miles away, and the virtual walk runs through Feb. 12

“We encourage you to track and report your healthy miles, which is easy to do using our online reporting form,” said Susan Zulk, Vice President of Marketing & Fund Development. “Who knows, if we reach Valentine, Nebraska, quickly, we can go the extra distance to Valentine, Montana!”

For each mile walked, the participants’ names will be entered into a drawing for a creative basket of Valentine goodies, compliments of the Spencer Hospital Gift Shop – just in time for you to enjoy for the holiday or gift it to someone who has captured your heart. Entering the drawing and reporting miles can be accomplished online by following this link: https://forms.office.com/r/JnP0cTYHwh or scanning the QR code to reach the online virtual walk form.

Statewide High School Voter Registration Day is Feb. 13

Iowa Secretary of State Paul Pate this week announced the date for the 2024 Statewide High School Voter Registration Day, Feb. 13. On this day, Iowa high school students are encouraged to take steps to register to vote, make a plan to vote when they are eligible, and learn more about Iowa’s voting process.

There are currently more than 4,500 17-year-olds already registered to vote in Iowa. This number is significantly higher than 3,400 17-year-olds registered to vote in September 2023 in the weeks leading up to 2023 National Voter Registration Day.

Iowa law allows 17-year-olds to register to vote and participate in primary elections if they turn 18 prior to or on the day of the general election.

With this statewide day of action, Pate is encouraging high schools in all 99 counties to host a voter registration drive and educate students on the voter registration and participation process. Iowa law requires high schools to conduct two voter registration drives every school year.

Currently 2.2 million Iowans are registered to vote. Iowa has some of the best voter registration and participation rates in the nation and is ranked in the Top 3 nationally for election administration.

To check your voter registration status, register to vote or update your information, visit VoterReady.Iowa.gov.

Walleye season closes Feb. 15

The walleye fishing season on Spirit, East and West Okoboji lakes is open through Feb. 14. It will close after that date and reopens on May 4. These are the only Iowa lakes that have a closed season for walleye.

For more information on fishing regulations, go to http://www.iowadnr.gov/fishing.

Feb. 20 deadline for ice shelters

Ice fishing shelters, left unattended, must be removed from state-owned lands and waters, including parking lots and boat ramps by Feb. 20.

Ice fishing shelter owners who camp in their shelter can remain on state-owned land past the Feb. 20 deadline if they pay for a campsite in a state park campground.

Ice fishing shelter owners are encouraged not to wait until the last minute to get their shelter off the ice. If a shelter falls through the ice, the owner is responsible for getting it out of the lake.

‘Slam Dunk’ Against Hunger

Elderbridge Agency on Aging is hosting an annual online fundraiser, “Slam Dunk” Against Hunger. Bidding will begin on Feb. 25 and end on March 3.

Due to the increasing need for congregate and home-delivered meals, as well as stagnant funding streams, Elderbridge is fundraising to help meet service gaps for Iowa’s distinguished residents and their caregivers.

According to Elderbridge, malnutrition in older Iowans is increasing in prevalence. This fundraising event will impact the individuals they serve. Funds raised will be utilized for home-delivered meals and congregate meals.

Those interested in providing sponsorships and/or donations are invited to check this link: https://elderbridge.org/become-a-sponsor/ for more information. Donations can either be monetary or items for the auction. Any contribution will be appreciated.
