Rosalie Phyllis “Rose” Scholten, daughter of Vernon H. and Verna N. (Van Roekel) DeKock, was born in Sioux Center on June 15, 1936. She spent her youth in the Sioux Center-Maurice area, attending school in Sioux Center and graduating from Sioux Center High School with the Class of 1953.

Rose was united in marriage to Robert Anthony “Bob” Scholten on Feb. 21, 1958 at Sioux Center. Their life together began on a farm near Melvin where Bob raised livestock and grew row crops. The bulk of their married life was spent there and eventually four children would complete their family: Randal, Ronald, Ranae and Rachelle.

Along with taking care of her family’s needs and keeping their home running smoothly, Rose was also employed in the healthcare field. Over the years she worked at the Sioux Center Hospital, Prairie View Nursing Home in Sanborn and Village Northwest Unlimited in Sheldon. Her caring demeanor and gentle kindness were attributes she generously shared with others in need.

One of Bob’s favorite things to do was to go fishing, and Rose enjoyed it too. When the kids got old enough they’d all grab a pole and head for the water for a fun time together. Reading and doing Word Search and jigsaw puzzles were some of Rose’s pastime activities. She also created some beautiful embroidery projects to share with family and friends. However, all of these things could be set aside if it meant spending some time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, who were her pride and joy. Scattered across the U.S. from Florida to Alaska, she traveled as often as she could to see them.

Rose was a member of the First Reformed Church in Sanborn and had participated in various church activities.

Rose passed from this life on Sunday, Feb. 4, 2024, at the age of 87 years. Preceding her were her husband, Bob (2016); her parents, Vernon and Verna DeKock; an infant brother; son-in-law, Charles Drews; and brother-in-law and sister-in-law, John and Harriet Mouw.

Left to cherish her memory are her children: Randal (Rhonda) Scholten, of Sanborn; Ronald (Kathleen) Scholten, of Waverly; Ranae Drews, of Sioux Falls, S.D.; and Rachelle (Christian) Davis, of Navarre, Fla; eight grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; her brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Kenneth (Joan) Scholten, of Mitchell, S.D.; other relatives and friends.
