Bill spent four years in the U.S. Air Force and then received his B.A. degree from Buena Vista College in Storm Lake, his Master's degree in School Administration and his superintendent's license from the University of Northern Iowa, followed up by postgraduate courses from Iowa State University.

His 36-year career as an educator included: teacher/coach in the Forest City School District, high school principal at Rudd-Rockford Marble Rock, superintendent at Rolfe, superintendent at Hartley and Hartley-Melvin, and superintendent at Estherville and Estherville-Lincoln Central. He ended his career at Central Lyon in Rock Rapids.

He was selected as Administrator of the Year in 1990, and he was awarded the Bernie Saggau Award of Merit while serving in Estherville. The award is the IHSAA's most prestigious acknowledgement.

Bill was united in marriage to Jacqueline D. VanderWaal, daughter of M.L. and Dorothy VanderWaal, on June 5, 1960 in the Algona Methodist Church, with Bill's grandfather, Dr. H.E. Hutchinson, assisting in the ceremony. Bill said on numerous occasions he would not have been the man he was without Jackie.

He enjoyed reading, traveling with Jackie, Iowa Hawkeye sports (especially women's basketball), spending fall Saturdays cheering on the Hawks from the south end zone, and he would plan his whole day around the Chicago Cubs baseball on television. After moving to the Iowa City/Coralville area, he was a member of the Monday Morning Quarterback Club.

Bill passed away on June 13, 2022 at Mercy Rehabilitation Hospital in Coralville after a three-year struggle with Parkinson's Disease. As per his request, there were no services and cremation was commenced.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Jackie; his daughter, Jill; and his beloved dog, Max. His son, Brad, also recently passed.

Bill is survived by his sister, Sue Zwemke and brother-in-law, Larry Zwemke, of Spencer; his sister-in-law, Dr. Cheryl VanderWaal, of Sausalito, Calif.; and many nieces and nephews.
