Musical medleys are in the spotlight

H-M-S ensembles perform during late winter concert

Musical medleys were featured during the late winter concert presented at Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn High School on Feb. 29.

The concert band performed a trio of compositions featuring medleys of popular tunes and themes. Selections from "Aladdin" included "Arabian Nights," "Friend Like Me" and "A Whole New World." Hits in the "Legends of Rock!" medley included "Hit Me with Your Best Shot," "Barracuda," "Paranoid" and "Rock and Roll All Nite." The "Best of the West!" featured "I'm On My Way," "The Good, the Bad and the Ugly," "Blazing Saddles" and "The Magnificent Seven."

Concert choir members sang "Medley from Lion King," which featured "Circle of Life," "Oh, I Just Can't Wait to Be King," "Be Prepared," "Hakuna Matata" and "Can You Feel the Love Tonight." Soloists were Jenna McCallum, Nathaniel Ball, Jordan Lux, Moises Gonzalez and Kaylee Walker.

The choir also sang "Million Dreams" featuring soloists Brody Meendering, Emery Cammann and Megan Otto, and "Shallow" which featured Dawson Niichel and Madi Lauer. Both selections were accompanied by Ava Reitsma.

The jazz band and jazz choir performed music they have been playing and singing at several competitions.

The jazz band's set included "How High the Moon" with a trumpet solo by Lillian Van Loon; "Lean on Me" with a trumpet solo by Annika Overmire; and "Fast Break," featuring Overmire and Owen Haspels on alto saxophone.

Selections performed by the jazz choir were "Blue Skies," with soloists Jamie Diaz and Eric Aguirre; "Fields of Gold" with soloists Natalie McDaniel, Moises Gonzalez, Kaylee Newkirk and Dawson Niichel; and "Sing, Sing, Sing."

Andrew Yenzer is the instrumental director and Kristi Daggett is the vocal director.
