Serving O'Brien & Clay Counties
Several spots will be on November ballot
Local residents have a three-week window to file nomination papers and get their names on the June 4 primary election ballot.
Several county offices are up for election this year. The filing period started March 4 and ends March 22. Candidates must win their party’s nomination in the primary election to get on the November ballot.
The following positions are up for election in O’Brien County in 2024. All three are four-year terms:
• Auditor, currently held by Barb Rohwer.
• Sheriff, currently held by Bruce Devereaux.
• Supervisor Districts 1, 2 and 3, currently held by Tim Overmire, John Steensma and Nancy McDowell, respectively.
Clay County also has several positions on the ballot in 2024:
• Auditor, currently held by Ann Baschke.
• Sheriff, currently held by Chris Raveling.
• At-Large Supervisor (2), currently held by Randy Swanson and Art Hamrick.
All seats up for election this year in O’Brien and Clay counties are currently held by Republicans.
According to the Iowa Secretary of State’s website, eligible electors of the appropriate county or supervisor district may sign nomination petitions. An eligible elector meets all of the requirements to register to vote but does not have to be registered.
Nomination papers are available at the county auditor’s office or Iowa Secretary of State’s website.
The separate filing period for state and federal elections is already underway and runs through this Friday, March 15. Locally, the seats of House District 6 Rep. Megan Jones (R-Sioux Rapids) and House District 5 Rep. Zach Dieken (R-Granville) are on the ballot, as is House District 10 Rep. John Wills (R-Spirit Lake). All three have filed for re-election and had no primary opponents as of Tuesday evening, according to the secretary of state’s website. No Democrats had filed to run for any of the three seats, either.
At the federal level, Republican District 4 Rep. Randy Feenstra is up for election. He is being challenged by Kevin Virgil. No Democrat had filed to run as of Tuesday evening.
