Top 10 placings for Hawks in running and field events
Several individual and relay competitors from Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn finished in the Top 10 during a meet hosted by Buena Vista University on March 15.
On the boys' side, Jacob Cates finished fifth (44'2-1/4") in the shot put and Bryce Ortega placed sixth (43'5-1/2"). Ryan Grotluschen came in fifth in the 400 meter dash (:57.82), Jr Araiza placed 10th in the 200 meter dash (:26.03), and George Vargas placed 10th in the 800 meter run (2:27.24).
The Hawks' best relay finish came in the 4x200, where the "A" team of Araiza, Ethan Wiersma, Graham Lux and C. Grotluschen placed ninth (:45.08). Placing 10th were Araiza, C. Grotluschen, Lux and Carter Dolphin in the 1600 sprint medley (4:24.43) and Vargas, Damian Dodge, Blaine Finster and R. Grotluschen in the 4x800.
Other individual boys' results were: 60-meter dash – Araiza, 15th, :07,75; C. Grotluschen, 20th, :07.89; Wiersma, 39th, :08.40. 60-meter hurdles – Wiersma, 15th, :10.36; Nathaniel Ball, 21st, :22.03. 200 – Lux, 15th, :26.47. 400 – Ball, 15th, 1:02.24. 800 – Moises Gonzalez, 22nd, 3:10.30. 1600 – Vargas, 11th, 5:24.27; Finster, 14th, 5:47.55.
Field event results included: High jump – Lux, 13th, 5'2". Long jump – Dodge, 20th, 14'5". Shot put – Kevin Arambula, 32nd, 29'11-3/4".
The 4x200 "B" team of Dolphin, Ball, Dodge and R. Grotluschen placed 13th (1:49.13).

The Hawks girls' Top 10 finisher was Megan Otto, who placed in a tie for seventh in the high jump (4'8").
Running event results were: 60-meter dash – Payton Diehm, 23rd, :09.35; Pamela Mutombo, 27th, :09.41; Jessica Diaz, 46th, :10.27. 60-meter hurdles – Diaz, 37th, :13.54. 200 – Mutombo, 16th, :31.68; Evelyn Steffen, 26th, :33.82. 400 – Steffen, 16th, 1:15.60; Kynlee Dolphin, 19th, 1:19.21. 800 – Jocelyn Abonce, 17th, 3:07.66; Clara Funk, 22nd, 3:42.65. 1500 – Lexi Croatt, 16th, 6:27.0; Funk, 20th, 7:45.82.
Other field event results were: Long jump – Diehm, 19th, 10'8"; Madi Lauer, 20th, 10'5". Shot put – Hannah Tessum, 14th, 27'8-1/2"; Alexis Grover, 17th, 27'4-3/4"; Cammy Wilson, 29th, 23'4".
Relay results included: 1600 sprint medley – Otto, Mutombo, Abonce, Croatt, 13th, 5:20.80; 4x200 "B" – Lauer, Mia Harders Morfitt, Dolphin, Diaz, 25th (2:20.82).
The Hawks' first outdoor meet of the season is scheduled for March 26 at South O'Brien.
