Middle schoolers compete in State Science Technology Fair of Iowa
Young academics at Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn Middle School excelled during a state competition in Ames earlier this month.
The students traveled to the campus of Iowa State University for the 2024 State Science Technology Fair of Iowa, where they joined over 600 students from 70 schools across the state. They showcased their exhibits on a variety of topics ranging from chewing gum and bad breath to stain removers and pet urine.
Eighteen students in grades 6-8 participated from H-M-S. Big winners were sixth graders Elli Scroggin and Maddie Fritz, who took first place in the chemistry competition for their exhibit titled "Which exterior paint covers the best?" The girls now have the opportunity to apply for the national competition since they finished in the Top 10 percent for their grade level.
Other top performances included: Dalton Van Es, second place, Biomedical sixth grade; Scroggin and Fritz, Thermo Fischer Junior Innovators Award; Kaiden Koerselman, honorable mention, Physics & Astronomy sixth grade; Bella Dolphin and Ruby Overmire, honorable mention, Animal Science eighth grade; and Addison Huffman and Ellie Pals, third place, Environmental Science eighth grade.
Students earning honorable mention Larry Schinger Awards included: Koerselman, Scroggin, Fritz, Dolphin, Overmire, Audra Vollink, Alayna Benz, Alex Vogt, Ricky DeWinaar, Hunter Ahrenstorff, Jaxsen Rieck, Kate Rodriguez, Aubrey Dodge, James Carlin and Braxton Ball.
