Hawks record Top 10 finishes at Sioux City Relays

Competing in “Northwest Iowa’s Biggest Meet,” Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn track and field athletes found success at the Sioux City Relays on April 13 at Elwood Olson Stadium.

Top performances for the Hawk boys included a pair of Top 10 finishes in the discus throw. Adam Schierholz placed sixth with a toss of 141’4” and Jacob Cates finished eighth with a throw measuring 136’9”.

Bryce Ortega contributed a 12th-place finish in the shot put (44’10”) while Cates placed 27th (41’2”).

In the open running events, George Vargas placed 19th in the 3200-meter run (11:31.58) and Carter Dolphin was 25th in the 400-meter dash (:57.29). H-M-S’s 4x800 relay team of Blaine Finster, Nathaniel Ball, Damian Dodge and Vargas placed 16th (9:39.15).

Ethan Wiersma, Dolphin, Ball and Vargas placed seventh in the Class C 1600-meter medley relay (4:21.09), and Finster, Ball, Dodge and Wiersma placed seventh in the 4x400 relay (4:24.68).

The H-M-S girls competed in three Class C relay events. Payton Diehm, Pamela Mutombo, Kynlee Dolphin and Jocelyn Abonce placed seventh in the 800-meter medley (2:16.54). Diehm, Steffen, Dolphin and Mutombo finished ninth in the 4x200 (2:08.73) and Diehm, Steffen, Madi Lauer and Mutombo were ninth in the 4x100 (1:00.20).

Mutombo added a 15th-place finish in the Class C 100-meter dash (:15.10).

In the open events, Diehm finished 20th in the long jump (12’3”); Abonce placed 21st (1:10.97) in the 400-meter dash and Steffen placed 23rd (1:19.34); and Lexi Croatt came in 25th in the 3000-meter run (13:29.8).
