H-M-S has several place-finishers in 2 boys' meets
The Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn boys' track and field team began a busy week at the Unity Christian Coed Invitational on April 8 in Orange City. Competing against several strong area teams, the Hawks scored 43 points and had several place-finishers.
Competing in the field events, Jacob Cates was runner-up in the discus throw (125'5") and Adam Schierholz placed third (124'8"). Bryce Ortega finished third in the shot put (44'3-1/2") and Cates was fifth (42'8-1/2").
Top 6 individual finishes in running events were: 200 – Carter Dolphin, fourth, :25.69. 400 – Ryan Grotluschen, fifth, :57.16. 800 – Grotluschen, fifth, 2:21.25. 1600 – George Vargas, sixth, 5:27.75; 3200 – Vargas, fourth, 11:36.65.
The Hawks competed in two relays: 4x400 – Graham Lux, Damian Dodge, Dolphin, Grotluschen, fourth, 4:08.60; 4x800 – Dodge, Nathaniel Ball, Dolphin, Grotluschen, fourth, 9:49.59.
The Top 3 boys' teams were MOC-Floyd Valley 145, Unity Christian 130 and Sibley-Ocheyedan 126. Other scores were Western Christian 51, Storm Lake 50, H-M-S 43 and West Sioux 21.

H-M-S also scored well in the field events at the Wolverine Midseason Meet on April 11, hosted by South O'Brien.
Ortega won the shot put with a distance of 43'9" and Cates was runner-up in the discus throw with his best effort of 131'1". Cates also placed fifth in the shot put (41'1/2").
The Hawks also fared well in several running events: 1600 – Vargas, second, 5:27.76; Blaine Finster, fourth, 6:03.04. 110-meter hurdles – Ethan Wiersma, fourth, :20.24. 800 – Finster, fifth, 2:35.64; Dodge, sixth, 2:41.15. 400-meter hurdles – Ball, fifth, 1:08.55. 100 – Lux, sixth, :13.44. 400 – Dodge, sixth, 1:05.55.
Relay results included: 4x800 – Vargas, Ball, Finster, Grotluschen, second, 9:49.69. 800 sprint medley – Wiersma, Lux, Dodge, Dolphin, third, 1:50.65. Distance medley – Wiersma, Dolphin, Grotluschen, Vargas, fourth, 4:25.82. 4x400 – Dolphin, Lux, Ball, Grotluschen, fourth, 4:05.61.
H-M-S's best JV finisher was Damion Hansen, who won the shot put (35'4-1/2").
Varsity team scores were MMCRU 199, South O'Brien 151, George-Little Rock 82, H-M-S 65 and West Sioux 54.
The H-M-S Coed Relays will be held on Friday, April 19. Competing teams include Akron-Westfield, George-Little Rock, Harris-Lake Park, Okoboji, Remsen St. Mary's, Sibley-Ocheyedan, Storm Lake St. Mary's and Trinity Christian. H-M-S will also compete at the Okoboji Relays on April 22.
