Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn senior Jacob Cates last week signed his letter of intent to play baseball next year at Grand View University in Des Moines.
Cates was recruited by GVU and will be a catcher on the baseball team. He was contacted by multiple colleges for catching and pitching, but ultimately committed to play for the Vikings due to their ongoing success in their athletic and academic programs.
Cates has been catching and pitching for H-M-S at the varsity level since his freshman year and has received multiple awards, including three times All War Eagle Conference, two times First Team and one Honorable Mention All-District.
In his junior year, Cates ranked seventh among pitchers in Class 1A with 80 strikeouts. He plays fall and spring baseball for the Sioux City Futures and Cedar Valley Crush, the latter of which is coached by Nick Klein, a 2003 H-M-S graduate who also played catcher for the Hawks.
