Hawk boys fall short in WEC golf duals

Playing on a very windy day at Sanborn Golf and Country Club, Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn could not keep pace with South O'Brien during a 186-203 loss. The War Eagle Conference boys' golf dual was played April 18.

"It was a difficult night weather-wise but we are dealing with it," Hawk coach Mark Japenga acknowledged. "I am happy with the way our kids are battling and working through some adversity."

Aiden Bush was a medalist for the first time this season, finishing No. 3 with a round of 46. Other scores for H-M-S were Eli Mastbergen 51, Kolby Douma and Talan Zearing 53, Jack Mastbergen 54 and Blake Meendering 55.

"Some of our younger golfers are really getting some good experience and lowering their scores, which is good to see," Japenga noted. "We need to make sure that we aren't letting previous shots affect our future shots."

South O'Brien's Alex Griebel (43), David Bottjen (45) and Derek Paulsen (48) were the No. 1, 2 and 4 medalists for the meet.

H-M-S fell to 0-4 in WEC dual action.

• Lose to Hinton

Hinton defeated the Hawks, 183-214, during a conference meet on April 15 at Hinton.

The Blackhawks were led by Kaden Barrett with a 36, along with Max Costello (48), Nick Oelke (49) and Ian Hertenstein (50).

Making his first varsity start, freshman Kolby Douma also shot a round of 50, but lost to Hertenstein in a playoff. Other scores for H-M-S were Aiden Bush 52, Jack Mastbergen 53, Eli Mastbergen 59 and Slayton McCarter 61.

The Hawks' upcoming schedule includes a meet on April 25 at West Sioux, a makeup meet with Gehlen Catholic on April 26 at Sanborn, and the War Eagle Conference boys' tournament on April 29 at LeMars.
