Hawk boys improve scores but come up short
Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn boys' golfers cut 28 strokes off their team total over the course of the week but still fell short of victory in War Eagle Conference dual action.
Playing at Hull on April 22, Blake Meendering (47) and Jack Mastbergen (50) finished No. 2 and No. 4 on the leader board, but the Hawks still lost to Trinity Christian by a margin of 202-212.
Also competing were Eli Mastbergen 56, Kolby Douma 59, and Aiden Bush and Talan Zearing 60.
The Tigers' Gavin Andringa (46) and Ty Brummel (49) were first and third among the meet medalists.
An improved team score was good news for H-M-S in a meet on April 23 at Sanborn. But George-Little Rock's score was better, giving them a 185-192 win.
Jack Mastbergen was top medalist, shooting a 44. Other scores were Meendering 47, Eli Mastbergen 50, Bush 51, Douma 56 and Zearing 62.
G-LR's Spencer Sprock, Matt Helkenn and Micah Jumbeck finished with rounds of 45 to claim the other medalist spots.
The Hawks cut another eight strokes from their previous team score but could not overcome West Sioux, 175-184, in a dual meet April 25 at Hawarden.
Bush was runner-up medalist with his round of 44. Other scores were Meendering 46, Jack and Eli Mastbergen 47, Slayton McCarter 55 and Douma 57.
Medalists for West Sioux were Connor Bergsma 39, Charlie Houlton 44 and Jayden Burt 45.
Next up on the schedule are regular season meets on May 3 at MMCRU and May 6 at Remsen St. Mary's.
The Hawks will play in a Class 1A sectional tournament on Wednesday, May 8, at the Otter Valley course near George. Boyden-Hull, Gehlen Catholic, George-Little Rock, Harris-Lake Park, South O'Brien and Trinity Christian will also compete.
The champion and runner-up teams and Top 2 individuals from among the non-qualifying teams will advance to play in the district meet on May 13 at the Willow Creek course at LeMars.
