Throwers have good day at Okoboji Relays

The strength of the Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn boys' track and field team showed again during the Okoboji Relays. Three throwers recorded Top 4 finishes during the meet on April 22 at Milford.

Jacob Cates won the discus throw with a toss of 135'1", while Adam Schierholz was runner-up with his best effort of 132'1". In the shot put, Bryce Ortega finished third (42'11-1/2") and Cates was fourth (42'6").

Two Hawks scored points in the running events. George Vargas placed sixth in the 3200-meter run (11:35.35) and Ethan Wiersma finished sixth in the 110-meter hurdles (:19.07).

The distance medley relay team of Caleb Grotluschen, Wiersma, Nathaniel Ball and Damian Dodge finished fifth (4:25.74). H-M-S also placed sixth in the 4x400 relay with Graham Lux, Carter Dolphin, Ball and Ryan Grotluschen (3:52.46), and the 4x800 with Ball, Dolphin, Blaine Finster and Ryan Grotluschen. (9:30.13).

Dolphin finished seventh in the 400-meter dash (:59.16), as did Ball in the 400-meter hurdles (1:07.08). Ryan Grotluschen came in eighth in the 800-meter run (2:15.33).

H-M-S's sprint medley relay team of Caleb Grotluschen, Wiersma, Lux and Dodge placed seventh (1:49.42).

Spirit Lake won the boys' team title with 196 points. Other competing teams were Okoboji 170, Sibley-Ocheyedan 89, Sheldon 75, Sioux Center 72, H-M-S 53, Harris-Lake Park 36 and Okoboji JV 25.

H-M-S will be back on the track on May 2 at South O'Brien and on May 6 at Sioux Central. The Class 1A state qualifying meet will be held on Thursday, May 9 at Armstrong.
