Serving O'Brien & Clay Counties

2 winners named in HPL poetry contest

The Hartley Public Library sponsored a poetry contest, “Write from the Hart,” during the month of April. Two winners – Clare Hibbing (first place) and Josie Hibbing (second place) – were selected in the adult category. There were no submissions in the youth category.

Clare Hibbing received a $35 Amazon gift card for her winning submission. The library staff and board of directors would like to thank those who participated.

“I Miss You”

By Clare Hibbing

Days drag without you here

Every sunrise and every sunset

Seem like they are permanently etched

In that blue sky above me.

I walk in the streets. At work. In one door and out the other.

Always waiting for you to appear right in front of me.

As if you had just gone to find something and have come back to surprise me.

Every hour that passes means I lose moments with you.

These dark days seem darker.

My words do not come as quickly;

They are hard to find.

Is this what is going to become of us?

Having to start all over

Every time I feel your touch

For the first time in a fortnight?

Will we ever be sewed together?

Never to be torn again?

How much longer can we do this?

(Tanka)

By Josie Hibbing

Editor’s note: A tanka is a form of Japanese song written in five lines with 31 syllables.

the distant tinkling

of a shell wind chime...

longing for the sound

of my name

from my mother’s lips
