Prepare, compete, be grateful

A Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn alumnus encouraged current students to set goals and work hard to accomplish them. Grant Hegstad, a 2006 graduate of H-M-S, was the keynote speaker at the H-M-S Athletic Banquet on May 1.

Hegstad focused on three themes. First, he encouraged the student athletes to prepare, with passion, purpose and persistence, and advised them to identify priorities and eliminate distractions.

"Success doesn't happen by accident; you must plan for it," he said.

Second, Hegstad encouraged the athletes to compete at a high level in everything they do. They should celebrate successes, but must also compete along the way.

"We are all a work in progress," he noted.

Finally, he suggested the athletes live a life of gratitude, acknowledging and appreciating the help of others while recognizing the investment that has been made on their behalf.

"We need to be grateful to those who have elevated us," Hegstad said.

Hegstad is assistant high school principal and career coordinator at MOC-Floyd Valley High School in Orange City, and is the head football coach. He acknowledged that while he is now a Dutchman, "my Hawk pride still runs deep."

Hegstad this winter received the Milken Educator Award, which is given top educators from across the country and includes a $25,000 cash prize.
